Here in Slovakia, when I search for "malotraktor" in the classifieds (small tractor -- which encompasses both 2 and 4 wheel tractors), about half of the advertisements are homemade-- either making a two wheel Vari or Agzat (or other) walk behind into four wheels, or else completely homemade two or four wheel tractors using various combinations of automotive engines, automotive transmissions, and sometimes old tractor transmissions.
I looked at one last year, that was made by hooking a Czechoslovak diesel walk behind tractor (motorobot it was called-- much larger than the vari system) (or at least the engine from it) to an ancient transmission and rear wheels from a four wheel tractor. The guy had to pour a bit of oil into the cylinder to get enough compression to start it, and while it came with a spare, apparently better working motor, I decided I'd pass on it!
