How to: Remove snow chains off tractor

It's that time of year.

It seems only yesterday, I struggled to get the chains on. Now the snow and ice is gone. The chains work well in the mud though ;-)

That's one of many ways to do it.
Good washing or place on rear attachment while using tractor dirt will dry fall off,or drag the chain in dry condition.

If you aren't going to run on pavement, why not just leave them on?

I think this is one sign mark on that "real spring" is here.. :)

They are wearing constantly metal on metal at each link. Best to save them for winter when you really need them.

In summer time You only need them if You drive very difficult terrain in forest but normally You don't.

Took mine off yesterday - once they were unconnected gravity seemed to help them come off easily. vtsnowedin is right save them for winter.

Took mine off couple weeks ago. Cleaned off dirt, put in cardboard box, soaked with Fluid Film to prevent rust, good till next year.

My pair fit nicely in a 5 gallon pail.
I unhook and drive off of them so they are laid out on the ground.
I deposit each gently so to not tangle them and hook the attachment hooks on the side of the pail.
Next I mix some oil with a solvent and splash that on the bunched (more like folded up) up chains, cover with a scrap of plywood and tuck the bucket out of site.

When I take them out in the fall they unravel nicely without any tangles making re installation easy.

Took my chains off yesterday. I unhook the side and center links and drive out of them.

My chains are dry in the garage and I remove them while inside and drop them in the wooden crate they came in. They don't really need any rust protection. Next fall I'd rather deal with a bit of surface rust than a gooey oil coating or whatever when re-mounting them.

Second language I'm sure and we understand. " I want harm to chains." should read. It won't harm the chains.
No it won't but a little used crankcase oil splashed over them when put away for the summer keeps them from becoming a rusty mess and does no harm.

I hang the chains in the lower level of the shop. (bank barn style building)

Without the loader, it would be a chore getting the hook end up the 8 feet it takes. ;l-)(

Yes when you have to move 14x28 (or bigger) chains around by yourself they are a real drag. A good excuse for needing that second tractor.

Yes, that's what I mean, last evening I was tired and write that on carelessly... ;)

The slower they rust, the longer they'll last.
