JD4300 glow plug light

I tried turning the key one click and push and holding it in for around 20 to 30 seconds, before turning the key to the start position, and it started but most likely because I started it an hour ago or so.
Is their any click or sound of any kind that happens when I try and activate the intake air heater by pushing the key in?
I didn't realize I did not have glow plugs because their is a glow plug light, but it doesn't come on. Could that be because their is a malfunction in the the electric heating element in the air intake to heat the air? or could it just be the glow plug bulb?

Before digging into the wiring and fuses, try that turning the key and pushing in when the tractor is cold. If the light comes on...great...if the light doesn't come on but the tractor starts easily, you probably do have a bad bulb.
BTW, I can't hear any clicking when I activate my intake heater system...

I haven't been able to look at it for the last couple of days. I tried the tractor this morning. It is about -10F this morning.
the trickle charger has been on the tractor battery for the last few days so the battery is fully charged. I first removed the large 1" square plug in the top right position of the fuse box and re-installed it.
I turned the key 1 click and pushed in and held the key for about 50 seconds, no glow plug light ever lit up. I turned the key and it turned over but did not fire. I repeated again and same results. third time, the engine is now turning over much slower, but no fire.
the charger is still on the battery re-charging the battery.
What do you think my options are?

Is the bulb for the intake heater okay.p:)

Try pumping the prime pump prior to starting?

I got it started, but I think only because it warmed up to about -6 and I had the charger on it.
if you think this would never happen without the intake heater, let me know.
Is it possible to reach down in the engine when someone is pushing in the key to see if it is warm when everything else is cold?

I think you've eliminated the light...now it's time to go into the electrical system and start trouble shooting. The attached file explains how to test the inlet heater.

It also sounds like your battery is on it's last legs...how long did you crank the engine? Seems like it's drawing down pretty fast.

BTW, do you have the service manual?

Roy,
I have a part number catalog, I don't think that is what you are talking about when you say service manual. I also have an operators manual.
I cranked on the engine about 30 seconds or so each time. I will keep an eye on the battery, but with the charger, I think it was good. It is at least 3 years old.
I will look over the manifold heater test and get back with you. Thanks for the link. This will be a big help.

The Service manual is quite comprehensive. It's about 750 pages...definitely a worthwhile investment if you plan on keeping your 4300 for the foreseeable future.

The relay timer went bad on mine last winter, I didn't get around to trying to fix it until this fall. The relay timer for my cub 7305 was 100 bucks. Since I did not want to pay that I picked up a push button switch to wire in. The weather ended up getting cold before I got it done. I am currently just using a jumper wire that I plug in for 10 seconds and then take out. I will get the button wired in this spring. Locate your timer and try jumping the terminals, not sure which terminals you would use on yours, you will have to look at the schematics.

How much is the service manual? and where is the best place to get one?
Also, on a separate note, my plastic hood broke when I had the bucket up and some ice fell on my hood. Is their a replacement sheet metal hood out there, or where is the best place to get a hood?

Not sure if anyone else makes a technical manual for those, but Deere sells theirs right through their website. Look under 'publications.' They are usually available on CD-ROM or paper copy, and both of those have their good and bad points, but they're the same stuff the Deere techs see(minus technical service bulletins,) and they're very comprehensive. I have had mine on my list of things to buy since I picked up my 5045D, but I'm having a hard time choking down the $500 or so for the parts manual, engine, and service manual. They are pretty invaluable though. I also doubt very much that you'll find a metal hood, the cost of a replacement one from Deere is likely to make you shudder and pucker up in anticipation of the reaming you'll take when they grab your wallet ;-)
