The problem is the metal shavings were already in where they can do damage.Plus I can't see how a filter that is a pre-filter to the hydraulic system is going to let anything get by?

The transmission housing is the oil reservoir. The filings were in the reservoir/transmission case with the gears, bearings and seals where they can do damage before they ever made it to the filter.
It's too bad the filters are so pricey.. it'd be interesting to change them more often to see how much more material shows up on the magnet.

I figure the cost of a $42 hydraulic filter small potatoes for a $20,000 tractor so I picked up the filter on Friday and am going to change just the filter at 25 hours and then again at 50 hours just for the heck of it. I'm not an oil or filter over-changer but because of this thread figure I'll feel better.
