I know this isn't tractor related but I need some help. My first son is coming into this world in November and I found a solid wood wardrobe for him. The finish is coming off and I would like to strip it off and stain it again. First question: how do I clean it up?

Second question: what should I seal it with? I want it to be slick to the touch and water resistant.

Thanks!

Sorry I can't help, but congrats on the new son. We have a baby coming next month and it's our first too.

What type of finish (stain, paint)

1.

If stain you can sand down and re-stain (probably not what you want to hear)

Paint ; stripper, heat gun, sanding

2. A urethane should provide a nice hard finish while being water resistant

You could always ask on woodworking web

It is stained and varnished now. I want to refinish the surface where it looks like the varnish is bubbling up. I was going to strip it chemically and lightly sand it, then re-stain to get an even coat and coat it with urethane. Is this correct?

I'd use paint stripper, and then sand it with a medium grit paper and then finer and finer. Find a hidden spot to test the new stain. Then a few coats of varnish or top coat and it should be good for your life time and most of you childs life time.
