My First YM2000

Ok if you have gray smoke you have fuel. (But as Carey said it could be bad fuel). The other things a diesel engine needs are air and compression. Lets assume it doesn't have a plugged air filter. (Actually the fourth essential item is sufficient cranking speed to make it fire.)

If it sat 10 years - and was in worn condition before it was abandoned - then the rings or valves could be making such a poor seal that compression is inadequate to fire it. You can help it a little: heat the head near the injectors with a hair dryer, then rig the hair dryer to push hot air up the air intake. Also assist the battery with a charger, preferably a 2/10/50 amp jump assist style charger, to make it crank faster.

Finally, and I've never tried this, I've read that worn out tractors are sometimes started by towing. That would be highest gear and low speed.

It might seal up better if you could get it running and warmed up.

It does have the o-ring around the fuel bowl. The fuel is new from the local station. Ive had the air cleaner off most of the time when I've attempted starting.
I'm going to replace the line from the filter to the injector pump. it looks very worn and maybe it is sucking in air. As well as drain some for good measure.
I have my charger with starter assist hooked up(125 amp).
Swiping my wife's hair dryer.

The pair of machines I saw were out near Anza or Ramona. How old is the battery, and have you checked the cables and connections? With the compression release activated, the engine should be spinning quite fast. It should read several hundred RPM on the tachometer. If it isn't, replace/clean the battery and connections.

Get the engine up to speed with the compression release activated, and at full throttle. Close the compression release and let it crank against compression, and you should be able to watch the smoke get darker. If the starter is slowing down any over the 5 to 10 seconds this takes, you have electrical trouble to run down. The fact that it smokes grey is encouraging. It will run. Just don't blast it with ether and ruin it!

Woooohooohooooo......It's alive. Not sure what did it.
I pulled the fuel filter out because it has been in for who knows how long. most likely water contaminated.
Then I decided I wanted to get a better look at the valve train. So i pulled the rocker cover and noticed that the back of the motor looked dry. Cranked it and the front oiled good but the rear rocker was plugged. pulled the oiler bolt off the side of the block and blew air through. Nastiness spewed out. wiped it up then cranked again. oil sprung forth. Glad I pulled that cover.
Put it all back together and bled the fuel lines again.
Fallowed starting procedures with the hair dryer going on the head, and clackity clack, black smoke and it's running.
Boy am I happy. Know I don't have to explain to the wife how it's worth $200 bucks.
Many thanks to all of you for the help.
I'm sure I will have more questions as I start getting it cleaned up and serviced.
THANKS:thumbsup:

It was a high risk move.
I've driven by it for the last ten years looking at it sitting in the field where it quit.(10 years ago)
We've probably all heard the line......"well it ran great, until it quit")
I still have the lighting and charging system to put back to original.:confused2:

Congratulations!!!

Autozone can test the alternator and regulator for free. Just tell them these came off a '72 Datsun (Nissan). Cause that's what they are.

Pro tip: Don't bother with the horn. Because you have to turn the engine off to hear it when it is working properly.

That is really good news. We would love to see more pictures as you get this thing restored back to serviceable condition.

Your experience here is similar to mine. For a decade or more my YM240 was left outside and run maybe every year or two when they needed the loader for something. The fuel in it was so nasty that it was near impossible to start - I think it was pre-1994 high sulphur diesel from their abandoned farm tank. A month of minor renovation was all this really needed - fluids, filters, replacing bashed headlights etc - and then since 2003 it has been flawless reliable. I just wish it looked a little more respectable. My second Yanmar I got in 2009 (YM186D) doesn't look any better, but it runs flawless too.

Hey do you want to sell that thing and double your money? :D

Be ready to drain the transmission and clean the suction filter for the hydraulic pump. It's not a major project, but that will likely be what you need to fiddle with next, once you work it a little bit. I use the Supertech brand Universal Tractor Fluid from Wal-Mart, but just because it is cheapest and the closest source.

I would suggest you run it for a few minutes, then change the oil. There is an oil filter pickup screen that requires pulling the pan to clean; if the engine were gunked up enough to stop the 60-ish PSI oil from pushing through the deposits, it may very well be struggling to draw enough volume through the crud. Another member, Domush, has a picture of a badly clogged one here.

Good job on getting it working. You will enjoy using it, the YM2000s are excellent tractors. Did you get any implements, or do you have any already?

I was so looking forward to referbing that horn, well, maybe not.
72 Datsun, that's good to know. The regulator has a fried wire , think it's a ground. It's black anyway. not sure if I can fix it yet.
I think i'll do like 289 says and run it a little tomorrow then change the oil while it's still warm. I'll see if I can get a pan gasket at the local tractor place before I drop it to clean the pickup screen.
How much oil does it take? I have about a gallon of 10-40, would that work?
Pics tomorrow.:tractor:

I did get a tiller with it. I have a disc that I think will work with it also.
I would like to find a drag and a front loader eventually.

I know nothing about these people. I haven't called, emailed, or heard rumors of them, but they DO claim to be local to you. I'm curious if they have a pan gasket, or any spare parts for their machines. Home Page

A far better choice is to order a correct gasket from Hoyetractor or LMTC, companies with a long history of supporting the grey market tractors and this forum, with superb customer service.

For what it's worth, the valve cover gaskets on these is very high quality and pliable. You may not even need to replace the oil pan gasket if you're careful pulling it off. I've never pulled any of mine to clean the screen, though I ought to.

How big is the disk you're wanting to use?

What kind of drag are you looking for?

Thats a cool looking tractor, Yanmars are great tractors! I found a few in europe if you google images of YM2000, but non ein the US. I also found a video of a similar model. Anyways, congratulations!

Close enough. Diesel rated 15w40 is recommended but I would run what you have for a short time maybe a month, as a flush then after that replace it with the proper oil. The additives in diesel-rated oil help longevity, as the oil loads up with contaminants, becomes more acidic, etc. Short-time use of lesser oil should be fine.

Four quarts will fill it halfway up the dipstick. That's what I put in, given my light use, but the full five quarts of proper oil will protect it better for heavy use. I suspect you will just putter around for the first few hours.

That one in the video looks very similar.
I'm headed to Napa parts to get a fuel filter and new line.
Any parts that have to be ordered I will get from site sponsors.
After looking at the pan this morning that looks pretty basic. I'll run it a bit then change the oil and clean the pickup screen.
I will definitely put some pics up. Of my disc as well, it might be to large for it.
Thanks everyone.

This will help on the Chg sys. It's for your 2000/240 Found it in my folder along with the Bill of Sale. I've had my 2000 for alittle over 4 yrs. now. I about went Down and Out but the problems with the Tractor have been very few. Rebuilt the starter was the most costly repair around 75.00 ;)

I didn't bother with a pan gasket on mine, Just used permatex 2. I have never had one drop of oil.

I really like that wiring diagram it shows the Thermostart on the Start section of the ignition switch. That is what my 2000 does, it ignites the Thermostart whenever I'm engaging the starter.

Just use silicone for the pan, its really just a plate. It takes 5 gts of 15-40 or 5-40 deisel oil or 10-40 will work too. Get a filter from where ever by looking up a ym240 which is the american version which is identical.
