I'm getting a set of CA Pallet Forks from Everything Attachments in a couple weeks for my JD 3520 300CX FEL.
I was was thinking about some sort of container type box something like a 3-pt carry all box I could scoop up with the forks and use to haul and dump light bulky materials such as sticks, limbs, and leaves within the loaders capacity.
Just now I have a yard to clean up from Huricane Irene and this sort of contraption would be perfect for the job.
If I had some larger limbs to move I could drop the box and lift/haul away with just the forks.

Just a rough idea would be a sheet of plywood bolted longways across a heavy duty pallet with some sides and back. All lumber would be pressure treated except for the pallet.

Maybe this has been kicked around already but I'm new to it.

Thanks for any input.

Could be handy but be aware that there are a ton of manufactured containers for this used in industry/warehousing - see this google image search for examples. You may be able to find something used that is cheaper and stronger. I'd think about how to dump it too - some sort of lock mechanism to keep it on the forks might allow for dumping with the forks.

Thanks for your reply. Yes I was thinking of chains or something like that to secure it to the bracket on the forks so I could dump the load and take off if I need to use just the forks.
I checked the google link. Something like that would be great.

If there is any manufacturing in your area, look around for small wooden crates that have fork pockets in the bottom. Where I work, we toss these all the time. Very handy for everything from clean-up to firewood.

If you will use it on a FEL you won't really need the dumping feature because you can just use the curl function to dump, same as you would with a loader bucket.

Get a toothbar, the projection of the teeth give enough of a cradle to support a big pile of branches. You can haul them away and raise the bucket very high onto a pile, then use the bucket to compact the pile down. Works like a charm. I have a lot of branches to clear from Irene, I will take a picture showing how much I can stack onto the bucket.

Used pallets are easy to find free...just get one and build onto it what you want/need. Have you checked out the forks sold by Artillian?

I made a box to handle my leaf collection, I just used the plywood and 2x4's on the bottom to keep it tight then a threaded rod bent into a J shape to grab the fork frame and pull the box in tight. It's basically an 8ft wide bucket now, I kept mine low by not using the pallet so I can drive it under a pile and scoop it up to make loading it easier.

Works great and saves time by eliminating handling the leaves as many times as other methods. One guy here on TBN has one similar and he added a gate on the front to hold even more debris.

JB,
The leaf box looks great.

I was really more impressed by the edgeing between your gravel driveway and the grass, very neat job there.

Up here in apple country used apple bins are perfect.

The new ones are a light plastic.....make nice above ground planters for a garden also.

I've got some nice pallets to work with so I'll see what I can come up with as far as a design.

Yes I did look at those forks, they are really nice. The CA forks were about 250-300 cheaper. Saw some good reviews on them so I think I'll be satisfied.

Thanks for the input.

That's just what I was thinking about. It looks like it works great. Is that 3/4in plywood with 1/2 in on the sides and back? Good point on not using a pallet so you can get low. Am I correct in that it looks like you secured it with some type of rachet straps by the hooks on the side? Great design I think I will copy it if you don't mind. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery so consider yourself flatterd. Really nice job you did there. Thanks

Yup, 3/4 and 1/2 PT. Having it low is more the reason I did it w/o the pallet than driving it under a pile, have to be careful doing that.
I tried it with the straps at first but it was not as secure as I wanted, so I used long bolts attached to the fork frame, 2 on each side, one is bet like a j-hook to catch part of the frame and 1 is thru bolted to a flat spot on the fork frame. Now it's as tight as a skeeter's tweeter. Very stable for dumping or using as a man lift.

Nice tool holder on that ballast box, too, JB4310!

Thanks,

JB

I just finished this box. It is built on a pallet. Only needed to buy some staples, had everything else on hand or it was free. Be sure you have proper ballast behind your tractor for your load, not so in this picture.
