There are two lines of force, at the level of the rear axle, and where the tire treads pull against the ground. This has gotten me to thinking that it can go over.

The angle of the pull must be taken into account as well as the angular motion at the axle.:)

Still thinking. The axle can't move the tractor forward unless the tires are pulling at ground level, so the operative forward force would have to be at the ground level. And the drawbar would exert a rearward counter force above the ground, should the tractor move forward.

I think the moral of the story is do not pull on something that won't move.

You never know it won't move until your front tires are up in the air, and even then it might be inching forward. :laughing:

Maybe I've hit my head too many times but I think my front tires are off the ground more often than not. Some day I will have a bigger tractor.

Tire speed makes a difference. (Faster = more likely to rare up)

Ground speed makes a difference.

Distance from axle centerline to hitch point makes a difference.

distance from hitch point (on tractor) to hitch point (on object being towed) makes a difference. (Shorter = more likely to rare up)

Traction makes a HUGE difference. (see #1 and #2)

Tire inflation/construction makes a difference (tractors CAN bounce like a basketball in a hard pull)

Height of drawbar makes the BIGGEST difference. (lower is better)

I've seen a few pulling tractors with drawbar well below axle centerline and hitch point VERY close to axle climb up and go over backwards.

Ya gotta consider ALL the forces at play.

If that chain is angled down allowing the load of pulling to load the rear tires giving good traction, they will walk the front end up and with enough momentum, right on over. Use shallow angles and this won't happen if hitched low.

The only way to completely prevent rearing up is you have a drawbar on the ground at the level of the tires but that isn't practical.
