Howdy. New to tractors.

I'm moving from NC to NJ into a bit of a fixerupper on a little over 3 acres. House has been empty, so the front and back grass seems to have died and been replaced by weeds. The last acre is woods and a stream.

So I could hire companies to come in and redo the lawn, dig up & replace dead bushes and small trees, put in a sprinkler system and clean up the woods. Some grading needs to be done, a garden and a bunch of flower beds. And driveways that are probably 200' long and will need plowing in the winter.

Or I could get a diesel compact tractor and do it myself.

On a property of this size, overkill or just normal excess?

Never ridden anything bigger than a Toro riding lawnmower. What would you do?

I got room for it. Four car garage that a car will never see. Just motorcycles and toys.

Three acres? Garage space? What's the question.... I mean I'd get a tractor and do it myself. One of the compacts would do great. There is so much that can be done with a compact that has a front end loader and a few implements. Much more convienent then having to wait on the companies to come do it their way. You can get it done your way and when you want/need it done. You could even put in a nice size garden assuming the three acres is not on steep hill side. My vote is to "do it myself"

This, will depend a lot on who you are. Do you, like this kind of work?
Do you, mind sweating, getting dirty? What is your temperament. Are you, willing to learn how to operate your equipment SAFELY?? Do you have the time? etc,etc

You guys are complete enablers. Cool.:D Research starts!

loghouse511, you've also given me something to think about. I'm not a putterer. And my job involves a lot of travel. But I don't mind sweating, I'm excited about fixing up the property and I love toys.

I'd buy the tractor, put in ~1/2 acre of irrigated "nice" smooth lawn around the house. Take your time and get the ground really smooth, you only get one chance.

For the other 1.5 acres, level and plant (in the fall) a native grass variety that does not require irrigation; leave it as meadow or cut occasionally/as needed.

I like working the land and mowing, but hate maintaining 2 acres = 250 sprinklers which after 5 yrs or so start to fail randomly. If you do irrigate, choose metal elevated industrial/farm grade large sprinklers not the residential plastic ones. Advice from a "sprinkler slave".

I have 3 acres and was in a similar fix. i bought a MF1010 ($4,000) and did it myself. If I had it to do over, I'd held out for a BX ($7,000-8000 used) with an FEL, drag box, and a belly mower, then I'd had one unit to do it all, now I am looking at another $3K for a new mower, maybe.

Get the sub compact and don't look back. They are unbelievable little workhorses, and the more you do and learn, the more fun they are.
