What no kitchen sink.....

Sure! Plenty of room for kitchen sink in the back seat :D
But seriously, I can’t afford much one trick pony equipment. I like buying versatility. A tractor trailer wouldn’t have been able to do much more than haul hay or fertilizer.

But you can buy decent day cab tractors pretty cheap.

I played that scenario over and over and I’ve owned them in the past. Even thought of buying an all wheel drive day cab.....
Most of my fields are difficult to load a longer, heavier trailer and worse, they usually require 4wd to get out to the road. Perfect weather (dry fields) are one in maybe 10 days around here. My main buyer accepts hay from 5AM to 3PM M-F only. So that really narrows down the times I can bring in hay.

Ive done the right thing. I like the 4wd, like the crew cab, like the maneuverability, like that it fits in my garage. I can get out, take off my work boots and go in the house. No need to switch trucks anymore. Been there done that. Only give back is a tractor trailer can carry 10 more bales per trip. May have saved up front, but repairs, brakes, tires, storage headaches, winter started, lack of traction would be worse.

I would go the 5500 over the day cab in today's world too.

20 years ago that might not be the case.

I found several single axle 4WD IH7400 digger derrick trucks with digger removed in the $35K-$45K range. By the time I shortened the frame, added a 5th wheel, tractor air package and fixed all the broken stuff, I was probably close to 55K range and it was far from a new truck. Reliability may be an issue.
I like the smaller, new crew cab truck this time around. I may look into a big 4WD again in a few years for other work I do.

Picked up some culvert to repair a collapsed pipe on the ranch. Picked up the first load of hay for my dad. He likes to feed square bales to a few heifers around his house. I'll be picking up round bales in the next few weeks. A lot of places are still baling hay in Florida believe it or now.

I just picked up a new to me dump trailer. I’ve never been a fan of these but I needed one to haul trash. I just got it yesterday but so far I’m liking the lower load height and I think it would be cool to hook on my excavator blade to pull around and load.
