Your last generator Maintenance Run

Can't imagine the damage a PTO half shaft could do, whipping around in the air, should the tractor and trailer ever manage to somehow drift apart. Best case scenario, they only wreck the PTO shaft, but they're still without power until repaired.

I always pin the tongue to the tractor as a precaution. I have the caster wheel on the tongue set to the same height as the drawbar so all I have to do it roll it up and drop the pin.

I remember as a kid, going with my dad to Sugarman’s in Eynon, PA to buy it. Was sort of a Montgomery Ward type store. They had a little of everything there. Actually there was a MW store down the road from S-man’s. Remember going there too.

We used that generator to run sump pumps, fridge and deep freezer, along with a few lights when the power went out.

Wow! brings back memories. I used to hang out at Sugerman's regularly. You could buy everything from cotton candy to a shotgun. Bought my first one there in 1969. Sad to see the place go. The building is mostly vacant now due to water & sewer problems.

Mermelstein's, just down Route 6, used to be a good place to buy guns & ammo. also went out of business years ago.

Neat seeing the vintage stuff.

I have my Dad's McCulloch chainsaw. Still runs, used it this year. I have the manual, but I think the saw is actually tagged as Los Angeles, on the factory ID plate.... hard to believe, now.

Most of my mechanics tools are made in LA, all 1960-vintage Proto stuff. I think it was a fairly large west-coast manufacturing town.

Philadelphia was the biggie in the east, but most of my machinists tools are actually made in Athol Mass, all early-1900’s Brown & Sharpe or Athol Machine stuff.

I remember looking into it once, but too long ago to remember now, but didn't Starrett come out of Athol, as well? I think they might have been a spinoff of Athol machine, or some other such association.

Went up to my mom’s house today and got the 2 generators out of the garage for her. Brought them down to my garage to clean them up, service, and sell them. One is an old McCulloch 3300 watt job, with a flat head Briggs on it. Vintage 70’s.

The other is a Troy Bilt 13kw with an electric start Briggs OHV. Last time they were serviced was 2017. Probably haven’t been run much since. I need to drain whatever gas is left out and put some fresh in to test them. Luckily both have fuel shutoffs and were run until the carb was empty.

Picked up an oil filter and plug for the Troy Bilt from ACE hardware.

Started the McCulloch today. 2 pulls. 1st pull choke on, didn’t fire, smelled gas from the muffler. Turned choke off, second pull it sputtered to life. Ran it with a 1500w load for 15 minutes. Then changed the oil with 30w. Checked plug and air filter, all good.

Had about a quart of gas in it and it was sloshing out around the gas cap. Gasket is probably not sealing plus It’s a little bent, so I ordered a new one from eBay.

I've found on the new Briggs gas-caps I've bought, the gasket is a much harder, almost nylon-looking material - to stand up better to high-ethanol, is my hope. Worked on the last one I replaced.

The gas cap has a fiber type gasket that I think is just past its prime.

It’s a nice old unit. Doesn’t run a skillsaw very well, but it’s good for light duty work. Dad kept it under cover, so it’s still very clean.

The generator part is a heavy flywheel inside that when you pull the starter, it continues to spin for several seconds, and makes it very easy to start.

Back When.... manufacturers weren't afraid to throw metal at an application !

Also back to that era.... pulled an old Radio Shack Shortwave Receiver off a shelf today, to return it to a buddy who loaned it to me "a while" back..... man, some serious metal (big transformer) in that thing ! Back When... magnetics were low-cost, and high-performance semiconductors, expensive......

Yup, im doing 3 other cell sites this week and next week. Those include service also.

Get to try out the newer f150 4x4 system now. I just got slide bed swapped out and they installed shell.
