Funny. That pretty much describes the highly "Prized" ALPHA MALE perfectly.

I always figured the return to Utility Delay was to make sure that the Utility power was in fact stable. Sometime during outages, it comes back for a moment as they "try" a switch to see if it holds. But the motor and electronic reset aspect is a very good point.

There is a return delay (retransfer delay) to make sure power is stable usually in the 3-5 minute range.

The 3-5 second transition delay I mentioned is to allow voltage to decay. The transition delay should happen on any transfer between live sources and essentially stops the transfer at mid point when both sources are disconnected. Large motors can spin for a very long time but usually on act as a generator for a second or two.

Don稚 forget, I now have a UPS, so even if the power goes out, AND the generator fails, the FreezeAlarm will still call me. And if the power is still on but the furnace craps out, the Freeze alarm will call me when the temperature slowly drops down to my chosen alarm setpoint (in my case 7ーC).. so I am good to go no matter what happens.

All for about $300 US, plus my recently added $75 UPS.

Gotcha.... finally :).

Your typing was fine, but but what my brain was "seeing" was FreezeR alarm..... as in white-goods appliance....

I think I need more sleep, or more coffee...... likely both

Thanks Check..... that machine you have even has a little brother, that does pretty much exactly what I want....

https://www.aartech.ca/freeze-alarm-hs-700e

Not programmable setpoints, but does water too, at an attractive price.

They also offer a 6xAA pack, for longer 9v backups.....

Get it. My 9V. seemed to run down very quickly when there was a power outage (before I got my automatic transfer switch).

Actually, I had a look, and it is better than mine, for 1/3 the price!

I lay in bed last night and realized I was totally confused. The DELAY in my ASCO switch is NOT a dwell. The switch is designed to only have two positions, no inbetween (OFF). You could throw the main switch and turn it on manually after a brief off period, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the ATS.

Chilliwack, you were absolutely correct. the battery (I was told was "Good") was in fact defective on the Onan 7.5 Quiet Diesel. Found that glow plugs work and starter gets power but no cranky. Will mess with starter a bit. Keeping fingers crossed that maybe when unit fires up, there won't be an inverter issue.

MARINAS USUALLY HAVE PURE GAS.. TRY --PUREGAS.COM---

MY GEN WOULDN'T START LAST YEAR. I PULLED UNTIL I WAS TIRED, LEFT AND CAME BACK AN HOUR LATER AND PULLED SOME MORE. FINALLY GAVE UP AND WHILE PUSHING IT TO A BACK CORNER SAW THE ON/OFF SWITCH---IN THE OFF POSITION. NOW I LEAVE IT IN "ON" ALL THE TIME AND SHUT IT OFF BY TURNING OFF THE FUEL.

Correct, the standard Asco mechanism has a single solenoid to operate it and can’t stop in the open position. It’s a deficiency (or advantage depending on who you work for) of that brand but it also means they can transfer faster than any other mechanism for the shortest possible interruption between live sources but still an interruption.

To get around the out of sync issue asco uses an in phase monitor that waits until the sources drift into sync. Problem in large installations with a lot of distribution transformers is when you cut power to a transformer there is an immediate phase shift, plus you have the issue of electronics locking up from the short interruption. For an old pump station with nothing but motor loads and no electronics they worked extremely well but those days are gone.

Glad to hear you’re making some progress on your project, keep me posted.

My little horror show

DSC04795b.jpg

I know better than to celebrate prematurely, but I do kind of have a smile on my face.

Took starter out and bench tested it. Worked fine!

Reinstalled, no-go.

Found I had a bad ground (somewhere) which would explain those very high charging voltages before. Jumpered a ground onto the motor frame.

Finally got it primed, started, smoked like crazy and worked itself out. Makes power:thumbsup:. Although I have to figure out the numerous wires for a 110 output?

Curious where the ground may be bad.

I would like to put the output into a transformer, but I see the one I have handy is only good for 3750 VA and is 50HZ. Wonder how lossy that would be?

The machine is kind of dirty and I'm thinking I would probably be foolish to try and pressure wash it. What a crying shame that they use that garbage powder coat on these! A little wire brushing and some enamel would have done the trick Now what?

What an incredibly quiet little machine!
