It could, would be slow to charge though and unlike a sealed battery that they come with, it could offgas hydrogen.

AGM if you want to be safer...... but with FLA batteries I'd say the risk is higher with the average 12v sump pump backup installation, than on a ups installation.

This is now talking a language I don稚 understand

Lots of risks, with 'net connected devices....... why I'm in no hurry to implement remote control ioT in my house.

^^^^..... from the 100,000 foot level, this type of risky magic...... another good reason to have independently generated power at home..... the grid is at risk too.

In layman's terms put IoT (Internet of Things... anything connected to the Internet that isnt a PC) in place of voting machine...

Can I borrow that, and post it in the Driverless Car thread ? :D

Virtualization........ there are a few things driving these valid fears....... one is complexity...... as recently posted here, even people who are trained in the field are intimidated.

Two..... Time to Market........ aka, We Don't Have Time to Fully Validate This ! ...... That's What We Have Customers For !

Real software security is nebulous, even for people with some formal training.......

Marketeers are often correct...... much of today's buying public is more interested in convenience and bling, than paying attention to security issues.

Keep them personal generators tuned up, Eh !

TBN really stands for To Buy Now.... never any shortage around here of people helping us spend money :D.

Useful for plenty of things, but definitely for VOIP calling, I'd want that UPS in place..... cheap insurance to have. Otherwise, Murphy would have a monitor sending out a help message during the short delay for auto-gen start ....

Continuous filtering etc. that a UPS supplies is never a bad thing either.....

Good point, Dave, but fortunately my (Kohler) standby generator starts almost instantly when the power goes out. They advertise a maximum of 10 seconds, but it is more like one second!

The delays are set to eliminating generator starting up and dropping out for short brownouts that may occure for a few seconds. Ive had customers ask me to adjust their generators to wait for a few minutes instead if 6 seconds to start up to prevent this.

We have to be on standby within 10 seconds but consistently it is 6 seconds.

Once the generator is powering there is a minimum preset time from the last power interruption/problem.

Even a momentary voltage drop that is significant initiates emergency power...

Once the utility power is up and stable and the programed interval passes building transfers back to utility and cool down cycle keeps genset running without load for 10 minutes.

On large systems customers often think they want to be on generator as fast as possible but we typically shoot for as close to the maximum as possible which is 10 seconds for health care and 15 for most everyone else that legally requires a generator.

After a few unnecessary transfers to generator and subsequent interruption when retransferring to utility they agree on pushing that out a little. Some mechanical loads, even elevators aren’t required to be on emergency power for 2 minutes.

10 seconds is a tall order on large units when you consider 2-3 seconds before you initiate the start command, that leaves 5-6 seconds to go from zero to 1800 rpm to allow 2 seconds for switching. Just finished numerous tests with seven 50L units online at 60% load in 12 seconds. The next project is 95L units but the time doesn’t change, commercial life safety units are rated to accept 100% in one step as soon as they hit 90% rpm. For the 95L units that’s 3250kw.

As you can imagine, it’s quite hard on the engines... There’s no need to be online that fast at home, I’d let my home unit warm up for a couple minutes before putting load on it. Better transfer switches will have adjustments for all the delays.

Had to add lag on the retransfer...

Motor loads caused havoc without an added delay going back to utility power.
