Not sure about the thermostat, but I do have a web based level transmitter in my fresh water cistern I can look at my water level on my phone and it sends me a text at my set order water point. The website that this is based on will also text alert if it loses connection with the transmitter. If power goes out my internet will be down. Then I will get the text from my cistern transmitter website notifying me of loss of connection/power out. I am very safe to assume that with the power out the furnace won’t run. Therefore the temp will be dropping and I should get some to go over and manually connect and start my gen. Luckily in my adult life we have only had 3 power outages greater than 20 minutes.

Well, around here if your power goes down, and you have a belt landline, your alarm system can call you. Mine calls me if either the power goes out, or the temperature gets too low, or the freeze alarm monitor itself has a low battery condition. It uses a 9 V battery during power outages.

However, we recently dumped Bell and went with an Internet-based phone system, which is a lot cheaper. However then I had to buy a UPS, which I did, and I just installed it this weekend, and it is working fine!

I’m not really following this discussion about adding a temperature sensor. My little freeze alarm covers both power and temperature, so I don’t need anything else.

Had to add lag on the retransfer...

Motor loads caused havoc without an added delay going back to utility power.

If you’re referring to a delay between sources... that’s called a neutral (position) or transition delay. In large system you would almost never transfer between live sources without a delay. Spinning 3phase motors maintain voltage and causing an out of sync condition closing to the new source and many electronic devices will lock up when subjected to very short interruptions. Always better to let everything completely power down and restart fresh.

Again, standard on any decent transfer switch but a lot of home standby product just uses a pair of relays with no transition delay at all. I’ve had to retrofit delays into a lot of transfer equipment supplied with home standby systems, especially when installed in a small business.

Yep lots of required equipment with 3-phase 480volt motors in the Hospital.

I have had the Medicare come out with stop watch to make sure transfer complete within 10 seconds and it takes a lot longer than 10 seconds for these motors to wind down...

CM, ur, grs and others here know the engineering..... the bureaucats are paid to know only the rules......

On a home unit, I'd want as long a delay as possible...... avoids nuisance starts, and I'm not a fan of of only running a motor a minute or 3, esp. during the Winter here....

What you have sounds useful, but if I understand both situations...... wouldn't have covered Kevin's problem....... his power stayed up, but the main house furnace faulted-out on an induction error.

Where you live, your particular house/site, and "normal" weather threats are some of what will prioritize careabouts for remote monitoring.

Line-power, ground-water level, and house ambient temp are my top 3..... folks lists will vary......

It takes a certain level of wisdom to begin to perceive that truism....... :drink:

my dad used to say when I started puffing my chest out in confidence... "ya know... the more you know, the more you know you don't know"

I was impressed he could get 4 'knows' in one sentence!

Don’t forget, I now have a UPS, so even if the power goes out, AND the generator fails, the FreezeAlarm will still call me. And if the power is still on but the furnace craps out, the Freeze alarm will call me when the temperature slowly drops down to my chosen alarm setpoint (in my case 7°C).. so I am good to go no matter what happens.

All for about $300 US, plus my recently added $75 UPS.

Dunning–Kruger effect - Wikipedia & it's a well established thing. Knowledgeable people under rate their skills while the ignorant over rate their skill.

I spend a lot of my spare time learning about random stuff these days. So much better learning than getting an education now that I'm (long) out of school.
