We are spending six nights in Ka’anapali, then the last couple of nights in Kihei, at a condo right across from,Kamaole Beach 3. Small world.

We stayed at Kamaole Sands. Great condo complex. I want to try others but like it so much there that I have been back three times.
I really wish I had an underwater camera. I snorkeled with turtles a few mornings in a row at the north end of Kamaole 3 beach! IMG_9352.JPGIMG_9537.JPGIMG_9406.JPG
The kids had a blast!

Turtles! My kid will love that. She and I scuba dive together, and while we will be doing some boat diving, I was wondering if there were any reefs offshore that we would dive.

Small world again, BTW. I THINK that Kamaole Sands was where we stayed on our very first trip to Hawaii, over 30 years ago!

Another great spot for turtles was Ho'okipa Beach Park just east of Paia. In the afternoon the east end of the beach was covered in sleeping turtles. From a distance they looked like rocks. Image1550371044.603273.jpg

There were a few beaches to the south of Kamaole that were very recommended for their reefs to snorkel on, but I don’t remember the names. The local snorkel shops had a map with the recommended ones.

Aloha! And sorry about all the off topic conversation.

Found the supply line on the second floor toilet leaking and caused this only an hour after I turned the water on to the house. So thankful I turned it off when we were gone. This could have caused massive damages if unchecked for a day or two.
I am definitely getting a smart thermostat that I can monitor temps from away. Thinking either the ecobee 4 or the Nest gen 3

If your power is out how does the wifi work to send a message?? Then there is this https://duckduckgo.com/l/?kh=-1&udd...ne.com/news/defcon-thermostat-control-hacked/

I initially had problems with that link (likely due to filtering at my end)..... was able to copy it directly from your post and run it manually...... Potential big issue, with any 'net connected control device...... some good points have been posted here about awareness and countermeasures.

From a security standpoint, obviously remote monitoring only is less risky..... the worst you'll end up with is a false reading/alarm.

Short-term, wifi/router can stay up via UPS...... as long as your carrier is alive and kicking. After that.... cell reporting options, but they all have vulnerabilities.

For cold, one thing I set up at my uncle's (legal) estate was a simple thermostat controlled light. Set your low trip-point, plug thermostat into 120vac outlet, plug in the light switched On. The lamp sat on a table in a bay window that faced a neighbour's house - neigbour was always home, and on the same grid. Not that "remote" for reporting, but suited that situation, at very little cost/work to install.

After all this great discussion, I went out and bought a UPS back up from Staples. IMG_0744.JPGIMG_0745.JPG

The only time I will use this is if A) we have a power outage and B) my automatic standby generator fails to start for some reason. In such a case, my Internet, which also serves my telephone line, could not call me to let me know. However, with this UPS back up, of course it could.

Thanks for the discussion, guys!

No Worries Kev..... I'm not a person that minds discussion wandering around some..... seems a bit more real world that way. About the only thing that sets me off is the ad hominem nonsense that pollutes much of the web.... fortunately mostly confined to FP on here.

Besides...... up nord here we want reliable generators around so we can stay warm this time of year..... seeing nice sandy beaches looks warm right there !

TBN really stands for To Buy Now.... never any shortage around here of people helping us spend money :D.

Useful for plenty of things, but definitely for VOIP calling, I'd want that UPS in place..... cheap insurance to have. Otherwise, Murphy would have a monitor sending out a help message during the short delay for auto-gen start ....

Continuous filtering etc. that a UPS supplies is never a bad thing either.....
