yanmar tiller

Be gentle with me - I'm asking this for my friend and neighbour, Mr Rob, who is not internet savvy, by a loooooong way, and I have not seen the machine in question ....

Mr Rob has a 'Yanmar' tiller. Apparently the drive shaft easily comes off this thing. It has not been used for a couple of years, and now Mr Rob has gotten around to wanting to fix it, he can not find the drive shaft. I have the serial number for the machine ... it begins with 'hu...'

Does any of this sound feasible ? I looked on Yanmar parts online, and nothing came up for drive shaft or with a search on the serial number.

The good news, KATE, is you do not have to go to Yanmar to get a
new driveshaft. The tractor's PTO uses a standard size shaft, and
the rototiller's input shaft is most likely a common size. Have your
friend measure the diameter of the tiller's shaft, and verify that he
has the standard PTO on his tractor (1 3/8" 6-spline), then have him
determine what length he needs. Note that the shaft will "telescope"
within a certain length range. Once he has this info, he can shop by
catalog at a company like TSC or AgriSupply, or go visit his local
tractor dealer. Driveshafts are also rated for strength, so he should
get one that can handle the power of his tractor, as well as the demand
of the tiller.

It is true if it is a 3 pt tiller that you can simply get a new shaft from one of hte tractor parts places. However, for the 2 pt grey market tillers that require a VERY short shaft and have special splines on the tiller end it may be a bit more difficult.

I recommend that you post a note in the Yanmar forum (it is a bit further down the page) and one of the dealers there that both carry the Yanmar tractors and the tillers will be able to be of help. Also it would help to have the tractor model and if it is 3 pt or 2 point tiller (model no of tiller would be good too.)
