YM2002 and the family of 2's it belongs 2. :geek: LOL

The family is listed as:
YM2002 (YM1802)
YM2020
YM2202
YM2220
YM2402
YM2420

These models in the family are the first mention of the UFO. Yes, alien technology has arrived. :alien:

YM2002-YM2020-YM2220-YM2402.jpg

This machine is also a 'deluxe' model with many options as it's a Akira Kobayashi music star advertised machine in Japan. (Think Neil Diamond fame in music and James Bond 007 in movies). Having one of these is like owning a Lexus or Cadillac of the Yanmar tractors.

Owning one of these Yanmars in Japan gives a person the status of being among the proud farmers in this era. These machines were not your every day rice paddy abused machines, these were mostly well treated a favored.

Oops, ran out of space in this posting. Got a bit carried away explaining the importance of these special machines Yanmar made and the marketing behind them. Additionally, these machines of their era were not slackers either. Strong 3- cylinder engines were used, a big jump for the Yanmar brand. Later the 3T80 is used by John Deere in the popular JD850. Several Yanmar models used this engine. It's closely related to the 3T84 and share many parts.

YM2002 continued

Speaking of family models, the YM1802 is extremely matched with this model as a direct sibling. Thus, the attached document will show this.
Let's now look more into the machine itself. 🤠

This machine doesn't have the Yanmar Red emblem. Instead, it's a fine text of Yanmar on one line and stacked among red and chrome horizontal bars between the eyes. A loose translation is the emblem of a burning man or man of hot strong power. One that can project flames outwards. A man-dragon?

YM2002-image.jpg

The open cab with the double level deck. Notice the PowerShift with high and low selections.
YM2002-CAB-FORWARD.jpg

The dash controls are very plush and many in English.
YM2002-DASH-CONTROLS.jpg

The engine ID name plate isn't the typical design. Notice the plumbed in
ThermoStart. This type is not a manual fill either.
YM2002-ENGINE.jpg

Some engines did receive the normal engine ID plate.
YANMAR YM2002 3T80U-NA.jpg

The rear fenders have the tail markers. These are common on the upgraded tractors made by Yanmar. This makes the tractor street legal right from the factory.

From another YM2002 that had seen heavy use. This shows the tiller associated with the machine.

It is interesting that the 3t80-J engine used in the John Deere 850 is a sleeved engine but the 3t80U-NA engine you show is a non sleeved engine.

Indeed there are slight differences. The YM2002 came first. Was it a JD requirement to have sleeves? We shall see when the YM2500 posting arrives.

The sleeves are nice to have. Makes the engine rebuilding easier with the cylinder walls to exact size without having to go to oversize rings and other tricks.

Yes, sleeves are nice. Also interesting your 2610 and the 2500 have a version of the 3t80 engine. Those suffixes on engine model numbers have a lot of meaning, including hp differences.

And that is what escapes many of us, figuring out what those extra letters and numbers are at the tail end of the engine code. We now have many of those Parts Manuals, however, it will take lots of long reading and comparing to determine those differences. Something I don't have on my side.

Like yourself, others here and in the future reading this thread, they can glean missing info from decades past for a better understanding.

BTW, I love the fact you had owned a YM2002. I have a solid understanding now of the machine from your inputs and the history garnished over the years. It's a beauty to know the YMG was the forefront to arrive at this point. The Japan timeline chart helps clear things up from their museum of records. There is another Japan site showing what literal characters are used to define Ag equipment and controls of the machines. It has helped greatly with searches and to put this thread together. Sort of like knitting things together.

The Zen-Noh made machines from other tractor makers had to close enough to use tractor cabs or the canopies. Looking at your YM2002, the Kubota cab from that era would work, yet not on mine. The rear fenders give clues.

In a few days, I'll get the next model posted. We are in the Yanmar and Akira Kobayashi machines now. 🤠

Will you be doing the F - FX models ??:)

TBD. That's a really hard series to find any information about. It wouldn't be as lengthy as the YM or the RS or the KE Series. The F-FX Series is still a full blown mystery. I'm very often asked in PMs about any documentation for that series. I've tried very hard with several attempts and found only fragments at best.

Next up would be the YM2010. It is a different path than the recent YM2002 in it's family. It sets a precedent to nearly the modern day logo until the red V bars arrived.

What's the break down on the engine plate? HP, RPM etc..

Before this thread gets totally hi-jacked from it's intent ... :p

The engine plate tells the Engine model, the max engine RPMs, engine size in L, the ideal RPMs to the peak power curve and the Hp to JIS standards (not SAE).

In the Yandex OCR image translator from Japanese to English your engine plate posted reads:

Yanmar Diesel Engine
2TR20A-A MODEL (ISO)
Output Hp 20 PS
Total Engine size 1.145L
Maximum Engine Load Speed 2550RPM

YM2210

Yanmar has made many 1st in the tractor Ag industry and machinery. here is another ...

In order to facilitate operation and improve maneuverability, a clutch free variable speed power shift mechanism was adopted for the transmission of compact tractors. At that time it is the world's first innovative technology that brings together the technologies of Yanmar, the world's leading manufacture of high-performance. (translated)

YM2210B

The B-Model. This model tends to be more of the dressed up type. The eyes wear a mask like Zoro. The engine has cover panels complete on each side. This model is more plush over it's earlier version.

YM2210B--04.jpg

Unlike the other models moving from a base model to a B model, the engine remained the same, the second largest 2-cylinder Yanmar made in the YM series, the 2T90. The 2T90LE is the industrial and generator engine. Thus, parts for the engine are not too rare.

YM2310

The model with the power and the extra perk options. :)

YM1810D-MORE.JPG

Per the parts manual, as with most of the models in this thread attached to each posting, one will notice the
seat mounting frame. This frame is ideal for the swivel seat device upgrade. Wise makes a really nice Marine
swivel seat mount that can be easily retro-fitted to these models. Or, one can fabricate a seat frame like these
models for their own YM should room allow.

UTDA restored to new condition with all the modern safety hardware. I show these images because it's so hard
to find YM machines in mint condition from that era.
YM2310D--01.jpg

Like many of the YM2000 machines and higher in model numbers, Yanmar keeps plenty of the upgrades as standard
equipment over the earlier years before the 2000 was reached. Nice.

The chrome fascia plate around the eyes gives this a more modern look without being bulged out.

Like many models, the YM2310 also has the option for a rear work light for the back side of the fenders.
This is the first model of images I've found to show the OE Yanmar light.

The German tractor Deutz was air cooled but think they switch
to diesel engines.

Yanmar tractors are tested in Japan and now we have them.
I tried out the YT235C liked it so well ordered one LTLB, with
AG-MEIER RT72 inch tiller and a brushhog now just have to
wait for it to get here. They designe the tractor to fit you!
great tractors and thanks for the history

YM2500 the twin sibling of the John Deere 850. Just painted in red vs. green. And no, it's not a YanDeere. ;)

With this body frame size, the YM2500 is a good comparison to a Ford 8N, yet engine wise stronger.

A new novel use item appears for the first time. A working fuel gauge for Yanmar and John Deere machines. This fits the known models:
YM140, YM147, YM180, YM186, YM187, YM226, YM330, YM336, YM2210, YM2500, YM2610, YM3000, YM3810, JD650, JD850, JD900HC, JD950, JD1050

UTDA fully restored version
YM2500D.jpg

Full gear setup like it's JD850 twin
UTDA-SDC10636.JPG

Now twins do have their own unique individual differences. Howbeit very subtle. Notice the air cleaner. It's the average round type found in that era on automobiles. The JD850 uses a cylinder canister much like it's other sibling the YM2610.
UTDA-SDC10637.JPG

The YM2500 breaks the trend in the Yanmar YM model code. Models ending in -00 are 2-cylinders. The YM2700 returns to the 2-cylinder, but becomes the last -00 having one.

The YM2500 has the 3T80-D engine. There are many variations of this engine other than Yanmar and John Deere tractors. It's used in many places. The 3T80LE engine back in it's era was the main staple for the Yanmar Industrial engine class for generators, boats and other heavy equipment. The engine shares many other parts with the 3T84 Series engine as well. The YM2500/YM3000 Parts Manual clearly shows this fact.

Like many of the YM Series Yanmar's the YM2500 came with a multi-speed PTO. Or one could say the ability to operate the PTO at 500-540 RPMs in different selections from a higher engine rpm down to a near idle RPM. Only a handful of Yanmars came with the proper gauges to monitor this ability. Likewise, once can operate the PTO at 500, 800, 1,000, or 1,400 rpms should there be a need.

YM2500 tach.jpg

Even though there is no rated tow capacity listed for the YM Series machines, the YM2500, JD850, YM2610 with the tow-tube can move loaded 10,000-lb trailers in gear setting-2 without trouble. This is from 5 years of personal experiences.
ym2500-tow-tube.jpg

From much of the documentation and videos on the web, the YM2500 was mainly a land crop machine and not a rice paddy swimmer.
YM2500--JD850.jpg

In closing, the YM2500 3T80-D has a larger parts availability globally with the 3T80LE being popular. Additionally, the John Deere 3T80-J engine is for the most part the same engine with the same rebuild kits. If a person wanted a gear YM Series with good power, this would be a highly recommended model to consider. If a person wanted the same machine, yet in Power-Shift, the YM2610 and YM2620 would be the ticket.
