There are seldom seen Yanmar model cover pages from publications for the vintage machines. I'll post what I've found over the years.

YM173

(This is the machine that later becomes the YM1300)

Did a YM173 ever make it this side of the pond? In Canada, yes.

With the 2T72 engine. Stroke 72mm, bore 72mm. This is a bare bones SCUT.

Yanmar really does design the tractors to run half submerged! Even back then.

I downloaded this illustration of Yanmar equipment in use, from the Yanmar-Japan corporate website International section, in 2004.

I've wondered if the compression release on these is to recover from a dunking without damage. Rice paddy tractors must flop over or fall in holes occasionally. For the pre-computer models that wouldn't do much harm. Replace the fluids and put it back in service. Then expect 50% of normal life for the starter, alternator, ignition switch, headlight switch. There's not much else that is delicate, and none of it is expensive.

Launched out of the YM173 comes the YM1300. Basically an upgrade of the 2TR13 engine. The YM1300 was a tree frog in Yanmar lime green. YM1300A is the machine in apple red with a few upgrades.

The YM1300 will be an icon tractor for all of history. It's the FIRST 4WD tractor!

Before the YM173 and the YM1300, there was an earlier YM12A/13A machine in the history of Yanmar tractors. There is little info on the YM12A/13A machines. This B/W image is available on the Yanmar site under it's history. It's unknown if this was a tree frog or red. This came as the 2nd tractor of Yanmar, but first machine model Yanmar produced. The first model was the A30 made by Shibaura and rebadged as a Yanmar.

Look at the next image. It speak volumes of the 1st 4WD tractor. And YES, this is SOIL and not a rice paddy for tilling.

There are a select few of the Yanmar models that have this rare face like the YM1300.

Every time I see this tractor face, I keep getting a song in my head singing, Bob the Builder. I wonder why ???

The YM1300 also came in a later model called the YM1300A or YM1300DA.

The face, grill and logo totally changed. And a dually rear tire option became available. Even with 4WD, getting stuck in a rice paddy is mucky.

With the tiller engaged that's like 32 wheel drive pushing the tractor forward. So 4wd isn't as important.

Interesting that the 12A was Air Cooled!

Not sure IF the tiller with the YM1300A was forward tilling, backwards or both. I've seen so many of the Yanmar tiller manuals that ANYTHING in ANY COMBINATION is possible.

I do like the thought of 32WD LOL.

Like the YM1300D 2-cly being the FIRST 4WD tractor in history, the YM1401D follows in the same footsteps with a 3-cly 3T72SB as the first in history with 4WD.

It's only rumored, I've not found any evidence (proof) that the 4WD technology was the big item for John Deere to choose Yanmar as the CUT partner. I've read it on Japan blogs, but not finding a posted fact on this. I'll only toss this out there IF anyone has evidence or something strongly pointing to this.

I recalled on one of the tractor forums, someone got this as a Christmas gift.

And if anyone remembers Jay Brown who was the Yahoo group owner of the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group, this was his machine with the famous rear 3PT REL. His machine was the cover image for about 20 years.

In 3D animation for a game, can't recall what one, Maybe Need For Speed, this was made.

Some computer pencil art found too.

The YM1401 is one of the few YM machines with a high-rise dash.

What's a REL? I don't recognize that implement.
