I think that a lot depends on the type of wood that you are splitting. Around here it is mostly fir and alder cut 16 to 24 inches in length and unless it has major knots will just pop apart with an axe or maul. At the family cabin that my father had built years ago, I had to split firewood that was 5 foot in length. Yes the back of the fire box is 6 feet wide. It took several wedges and a 8 and 16 pound maul to split the firewood out of the driftwood that we collected and pulled up on the beach. Just my 2 cents.
