Hi Eddie,
Nice work. Thanks for posting. I have to do a similar job to my 1601d this winter. I figure, while i'm in there, maybe do both sides, do you agree? Also, can you list the tools you used to do this job? I want to make sure I have what I need on hand before i dig in... and dig in too deep! thanx, man, nice work... -arthr

By all means while you're in there replace both seals. The seals on mine were $21 each and just a matter of unlocking the other axle and pulling it out, maybe 1/2 hour extra work to replace the other one. Just think how upset you would be if you went to all that work pulling the PTO chunk, the top 3PH off, cleaning all parts of old gaskets, applying permatex and replacing everything only to have the other seal leak in a couple weeks or a couple of months. That would upset me big time. While you have all the oil out be sure to clean the hydraulic screen. It's so easy to get to at that point. I found also that after I got the PTO chunk installed, it's much easier to pour the oil back in while the top 3PH is off than trying to pour it in a funnel into a small hole.

You will need metric sockets, 1/2 and 3/8 drive, metric open, boxed end wrenches, snap ring pliers, box knife and a good sharp putty knife, to clean old gaskets off parts. It really helps to have air tools, but not absolutely necessary.

By the way, there were no gaskets available for mine so I had to permatex each gasket.

When you knock the seals out .Leave then the way they are so when you start to put the new one's back you will know which way they go.They are two back to back and they have to go in right.Well one is a Dust cover but they look the same all most.

My seals were made as only one seal. The old ones and the new ones. They must be different for different tractors. If you look back at the picture that says "Right AXle Housing" laying on the floor just under the hitch is the "Seal Housing" that the seal goes in.

Mine Had two seals , Just thought all of them did.That is good to know if I have to ever do the 1700 . I think the AXle is two peace on it.
