Good thoughts. I actually already have a 4 wheeler with a 3500lb electric winch, but I don't think it's quite up to the task. For one the winch on the 4-wheeler only holds 40 feet of line, so I'd have to go down hill (which is pretty steep) and reattach the winch line to make the complete 150+ feet pull. Also, electric winches have a low duty cycle. Something you don't have to worry about with a mechanical setup.
Yup, that's the appeal of the capstan. Me, I'd like to buy a skidder plate for the 3 point hitch and mount it on my 4430. I'll be pulling burr oak logs over 36" up outta my woods. I've been dragging them with a long cable, but it's limited and moderately dangerous. The winch on a skidder has a much longer cable, higher pull strength, and higher duty cycle versus a 4 wheeler winch.
