winch implement?

Has anybody ever seen or made a mechanical winch (capstan or drum-type) for their 2-wheeled tractor?

I'm looking into building my own capstan winch when it dawned on me that the BCS seems like a good fit to drive a winch. I have an extra tiller I might be able to repurpose its gearbox for this. But then again maybe that would spin to fast for winching?

I had a fellow call me about a capstan winch attachment once. After a long discussion, we decided that he would be better off with a small purpose built capstan winch. They're very portable and can be used anywhere they can be anchored. A BCS might make a good power unit, but it would not be nearly as portable. It would still have to be anchored to pull anything over a couple hundred pounds.

The tiller spins at 290 rpm at full throttle. Looks like the capstan spools run about 32 rpm? I just took 3600 rpm engine and divided it by 110 to1 gear ratio on one I found online. But they're running it on a 50cc engine. You may be able to run the much larger engine at a lower speed to get a slower rpm at the tiller. I'd think it might be a fun project and you're not out much if you have on old tiller to play with. You might even be able to use one section of the tine hub for the spool.

I have an older BCS tiller box here with one side of the tine set broken off. If I get around to it, I may do some playing.

32 rpm sounds like in the ballpark. Now that I think of it, maybe it would be more practical to use the drive off the axle to hook the spool to. I wonder what the rpm of the wheel is for the various gears for my old bcs 715.

The old advertising said 10 to 1 in 2nd and 20 to 1 in first. So 29 rpm in 2nd or 14.5 rpm in first.

My old Gravely PRO 8 would have been good for that, with all its speed options on the PTO. But what would you use something like this for?

Industrial Toys- I'm wanting to pull logs out of a fairly steep ravine- 60ft rise over 100 feet run. Kind of crazy I know, but hard for me to see good fallen timber just sitting there to rot.

TimberXX- Thanks for the link.. I have been scanning CL for similar things, but haven't had much success. I did see a capstan winch off of a tug boat.. Tugboat Capstan: 24" Diameter Vertical Capstan A bit overkill I think. Hehe.

If your unit is electric start would you consider a winch off of a small pleasure boat and run it off the battery? Marine batteries are much bigger but maybe someone can chime in.

Good thoughts. I actually already have a 4 wheeler with a 3500lb electric winch, but I don't think it's quite up to the task. For one the winch on the 4-wheeler only holds 40 feet of line, so I'd have to go down hill (which is pretty steep) and reattach the winch line to make the complete 150+ feet pull. Also, electric winches have a low duty cycle. Something you don't have to worry about with a mechanical setup.

I am starting at this Toyota transfer case and was thinking if I could use it to build a capstan winch. Too rednecky? Figure I'll build a platform for the 3pt, purchase an appropriate length PTO driveshaft from TSC, build an adapter the Tcase coupling and find a capstan drum on EBAY. This Tcase has a 2.5:1 low reduction, couple that with the typical PTO speed option, I should be able to a decent RPM option.

Yup, that's the appeal of the capstan. Me, I'd like to buy a skidder plate for the 3 point hitch and mount it on my 4430. I'll be pulling burr oak logs over 36" up outta my woods. I've been dragging them with a long cable, but it's limited and moderately dangerous. The winch on a skidder has a much longer cable, higher pull strength, and higher duty cycle versus a 4 wheeler winch.

Maybe something like this 3000 psi hyd winch. Mount it on the front or back.

I used to have a MileMarker hydro winch on a 4x4 many years ago and I think the millitary used them on the HMMVs as well. Tow trucks use the Ramsey hydro units to pull dead cars onto the flatbeds.

Winch on 2 wheel tractor was quite common in Norway in the period after WW2 until 1970 when many two wheeled tractors were converted to small forest machines to replace horses. The winches consists mostly one worm gear to lower the speed, the clutch brake and a drum. I have one of these machines so I can take a picture of the winch during the weekend.

These are two examples of how two wheel tractor have been modified
