3-Point Hitch Why I can't plow

   / Why I can't plow #31
I've got 80 acres and the only area that has EVER been plowed is the old homestead garden plot - around 100' x 150'. So when we moved onto the property in '82 the garden plot had been "broken" last in about '52. Thirty years - but the Troy Bilt Horse did a great job and we had a garden for about eight years - until all the local indigenous inhabitants - pocket gophers, deer, raccoons , chipmunks, skunk etc, etc found the garden. Then it was simply a lost cause - they did not want to share - they wanted it all. We quit with the garden.

Five years later I got a wild hair - till up a couple acres - plant corn - freeze corn - make shine out of what we didn't eat fresh or freeze.

I bought a very heavy duty Pittsburg single bottom moldboard plow. Took a while but finally got the hang of how to set it up and I proceeded to plow up about an acre. Thats as far as I went - that turned sod REFUSED to be broken down any further. My poor little Ford 1710 4WD and my Land Pride disk harrow were just to light to do the job.

I finally smoothed the plowed acre with my LPGS - scarifiers down - multiple passes. - Kubota M6040. No longer interested in growing corn. Just a whole lot easier to buy what I need at the "store".

It gives retired folks something to do that they enjoy "if" the local critters aren't robbing all of it, I had a big garden a few years ago and like you the local deer, bears and everything else destroyed it, I go the stand for everything May to October and frozen stuff the rest of the time..

I've made old horse drawn ploughs , brinly sleeve hitch plows , also made my own out of some plate steel. They all worked good. Lots of posts one here have good ideas etc;on setting them up. One thing not mentioned is that you need to keep the plough as level as possible. The top pin on a category [ 0 ] TPH should be 12" higher then the drawn pins. On a category [ 1 ] TPH the top pin has to be 15 1/2 " higher then the draw pins. Also it's best if the top link pin is straight up from the 3 pth draw pins. This will keep you plough level when lifted up or in the ground ploughing.
This is a pic of the plough that I made complete that I used on a old MF 10 and a old horse drawn plough used on my Kubota bx with cat 1 TPH
