Yeppers, and speaking for the old farts, we would like to thank you. We do appreciate your doing that for us..... but we also kind of wish you wouldn't.... and here's why...

It's because this buying things new craze is completely nutty and upsidedown.
Sure, us oldsters don't always buy used....but you can be sure that we take a careful look at what is available in the used market before we buy new. After all, we aren't allergic to saving money, and we can use our mechanical knowledge to tell us when a good used tractor is likely to be more reliable than a new one. After all, the warranty is for what? Two years??? And a tractor is good for 40. It's going to be used for a whole lot longer than it was new.
It's at least a double winner if we find a good used one.

But the nutty upsidedown part is that us old guys really could afford to buy new if we had to .... and we are concerned not for ourselves as much as for so many younger guys who really shouldn't be taking on more credit. We know - and they know - that ought to be learning enough to buy used - but how to do that?

I buy new because I like the smell of a new cab tractor and I like the shiny paint! I thought everybody knew that is the reason! But it does workout good that some people like to buy used, for instance the guy that bought my used Kubota when I bought a nice, shiny, good smelling L6060HSTC.

Well the L6060HSTC wasn't expensive, was bought with cash in 2016, still smells like new and is still very shiny. The M7060 that I bought with cash couple months ago also smells new and is very shiny, imagine that! Now the L2900 that I sold was mistaken for a new tractor buy the people that bought it from me, I bought that tractor in 1994, if that is any indication of how I take care of my property. What are these payments you speak of? What is rolling a note over all about?

I prefer to buy new vehicles, tractors, pickups, ATVs. The three Kubota that I bought were easy. I went in, negotiated price, decided, and signed on the dotted lines. In each case I told the dealer I would take delivery in 2 or 3 weeks.

I will finance anything at zero percent as I prefer my $18k in the bank over trying to save $18k. I paid off two tractors in 3 years by sending in extra when I could spare it. I have never seen any big savings with cash because Kubota, or any dealer, is getting paid cash anyway (by Kubota, Toyota, etc).

While I am at it, there is one more thing. If something is wrong with the machine I discuss with the dealer right away and follow up with email for written paper trail. Just one guy, at one dealership, started to tell me how reckless I must be operating the tractor but I steamrolled him with the owner and he is no longer there. I ***** for a reason, not because I want something for nothing. I am a consumer, not a sap.

Touche'... I buy what I want with cash. Keep it till I want something else and then get on with life. Ain't no big deal. If someone wants to do it on payments, who cares? None of my business...

My question, as a soon-to-be-old-guy- Where are all of these nice used tractors which you guys are referring to? I looked for over a year, and all that I saw was worn out junk-like what I already had- or 15 year old tractors which they wanted nearly new prices for. I finally did find a slightly used Kubota, and saved a couple of thousand off the price of a new one. It then took me nearly a year to figure out that the water in the fuel which started causing problems within a month after I bought it was the reason that it was traded to begin with. When you are working on a tractor where it died,1/4 mile in the woods in sub-zero weather , that two thousand dollars that you saved by buying used seems like a pittance.
I would have kept my old beat up '84, saving another 12K if I wanted to freeze my *** off working on it.

It's funny. You have an almost new tractor and you can't sell it to get your money out of it, and people looking to buy can't find a good, well priced, used one. It's also funny how people refuse to loose money to Joe Citizen, but don't seem to mind getting screwed by a dealer. It seems to hold true for car/truck and tractor dealers alike.

Buying in the used market can be risk. When I sold my Kubota L2900 it had 1100 hours, was a 1994 model, priced it at a fair market price, agreed to the price with the buyer. A day or so later he asked me how it started in the cold, I said "I don't know, it has always been in a heated building, but I'll tell you what I will do, I will install a Kubota block heater", then I looked at my records and saw that the battery was about 3 years old, so I replaced the battery, changed engine oil and filter, washed and waxed the tractor for him, but kept the price exactly where he and I agreed. The buyer told he he didn't have a way to haul it home, I told him I would deliver it. He came to pay me the day I was going to deliver it and I give him extra filters I had on hand for it and gave him a guaranty. He didn't end up taking a risk at all.

The only clean tractor I could find was a 2004 L3400 with 1000 hours, when I told him after looking at it that I thought 13000 was a bit high he got POed and took the ad down. At the time I had been getting prices of 18000 new for a comparable Kubota, so why would I buy used knowing that I was taking a chance with no warranty, and within a couple of years I would spring for 4 new tires? (+-$1400.)It wasn't even a shuttle shift, and even I would prefer a hydro to that. Again, where are all of these great deals on used tractors? Because I would have bought one in a heartbeat, and financing wasn't even part of the equation.

You know, if a guy takes really good care of a tractor and wants top dollar, well, it's probably worth it. What kills me, is the people that just can't or don't care to look after equipment and STILL think it's worth top dollar. Especially DAMAGE! To me, the cost of replacement parts and labor to replace, and clean, should be taken off the price, AT THE VERY LEAST!

I choose to take very good care of my machines, my vehicles, tools etc, not everyone sees it my way from what I can tell. I have seen guys start with a nice new machine and in a short time it looks like they parked in in the middle of their yard and run into it from every side just for fun, to each their own!

Yeah, I have a Rich neighbor that buys only new and trashes his stuff. Damages a fender on an Excursion sliding off the road, then damages the other side and rear in the extrication process. Then, he would never pay a cent to have damage repaired, because he considers that a rip off. Then gets incensed when the dealer offers him practially scrap price for a five year old vehicle that has been nothing but abused. Then switches brands because he thinks he has been unfairly treated.
