Why buy new

/ Why buy new #41
I was looking for a bigger bush hog to pull behind my JD2555. Found an ad on Craigslist for a guy 50 miles south of me with an 8 foot Bush Hog 3008. I liked the looks of it, but not so much the price. He also had a 15 foot batwing, and a whole bunch of other stuff. We talked back and forth, and I thought about buying everything he had, including the tractor. Talked to my two financial business' about a loan, neither would touch it. Because it was more money than any of my cars or trucks were worth, no way to use them for collateral. Have a decent rate on my house, it is paying off quickly so I didn't want to mess with that. Really didn't want to spend cash on it, so I just loaned the money to myself via the credit union and now I am paying myself. They charge a very small amount to handle the loan, and as the balance of loan drops, the money in my account is freed up. I made a counter offer on the whole package, and now it resides here.
Zero percent loans really aren't zero percent when it comes down to it.

Yeah, if you have $20K just laying around you aren't managing your assets very well. :)

So let痴 see, someone has enough cash set aside and invested that they consider spending money to be what you consider an asset and you assume they don稚 manage assets very well.
My friend probably wastes 20k a year on stupid things that he thinks are great, not sure but I think he gave at least half that to charity this past year and he still has that much or more just sitting around waiting for the next toy that catches his eye.
Funny that he always seems to have more coming in than he spends, it actually makes me sick sometimes!

That he gave half to charity explains allot. Thats more than likely why hes got so much coming in. You reap what you sow

Primary reason to buy new around here. The only stuff being sold is 275hp and bigger. For that matter - in 37+ years here - never found any used tractors or implements of the "homeowner" size. My son listed my Land Pride RB3596 on Craig's List. It sold, for asking price, within one hour. Wish I had half a dozen more to sell.

Sorry, you missed my point.

Why buy new?

For the new tractor smell!!

I buy new cars. IF my wife will be driving them.

Can't have her breaking down on the road.

For my tractors I bought used well maintained Kubotas and bought a lot of implements with the thousands I saved.

I bought new 3 years ago after always buying used. Then traded for used when I found a cab tractor I could afford. The demand for smaller tractors is greater than utility sized farm tractors plus financing options make it easier to buy new. Most folks don't have 40K laying round and need financing. With good credit all you need is your signature.

I always buy used except for vehicles. Anyway, I saw on John Deere buy online where anyone with good credit could buy a new tractor 0% for 60 months. Very tempting as I'm one to keep CC's payed off every month and no expenses other that household.

NOPE...I bought a used JD L120 expecting to put some work/money into it. Right now with a new Commercial grade 27 hp B&S and the initial cost of the tractor, I'm still in for $2200 all n all. A new latest model tractor to compare would be the L170. I've still save money and have a solid machine.

I see some of the tractors guys show pics on here and it's quite impressive. Of course they need this equipment to do a specific job or with attachments, accomplish several jobs. I like seeing tractors do their thing hauling plowing harvesting & bailing.

My old IH was 18 years old when I bought it for 5K.
When the transmission gear lost it teeth 16 years latter, it cost me $700 to buy a scrap IH and 6 hours labor to swap the rear halves.
I have save more money in other parts from the scrap tractor as well.

And I am free to abuse it as I see fit.
It is fun to drive.
When someone I trust wants to borrow a tractor, I don't have to worry about it, or tell them they can borrow it only if I can borrow their wife.

Why buy new? Because I worked hard all my life. Scrimped when I could or did without if I couldn’t. I bought used, repaired and traded my way up to a decent machine. Now that my wife and I are older and the bills are all paid it is time for us to enjoy the fruits of our labor. I could still be using my older machine, a shiny new one with factory cab and heat gives me great pleasure every time I use it.

If you know exactly what you want and need, plus intend on keeping it for a while, new is the way to go. I bought my 08 Duramax new (bankruptcy sale) and it has except for some gimmicks been totally reliable and cost me nothing in repairs, only a little brake maintenance. Meanwhile my friend bought an 09 2500 Gas, used and I swear to God, it has been nothing but trouble. Not a week goes by, that it isn't in the shop or being towed. And that's not the first truck like that. Same with the old tractors he buys.

The original question went something like this, "Why would someone want to buy a new compact tractor new when good used equipment is available?"

And I don't know the answer. I've wondered about it myself. In fact, this obsession with buying new things is one of the strange generational changes that perplexes us older guys about the younger generation. We wonder about it a lot.

There's certainly no denying that people nowdays prefer to look at buying new before looking at buying used anything..... even houses.

One thing that forums like this have have taught us is that it probably isn't because new tractors are more reliable than used ones. Judging from the messages on TBN and several other forums, there are many more messages about problems with new tractors than with used ones.

So If the reason isn't reliability, my guess is that the popularity of buying new comes from a combination of wanting something today rather than tomorrow, not having mechanical skills, and already being trapped into buying on credit.

But is it really that simple? I'd sure like to hear some opinions.
thanks, rScotty
