Rumbles,

If a first-timer like me can do it, anyone can...just takes a lot of time!

I've helped on plenty of hopuses and pole barns, it can be done, but friends with equipment are a true saving grace. My BIL just built a 34 x 56 that we helped him build from the ground up. setting 4x6 poles from 18' to 24'lomg...wow that was fun, but with enough hands it can be done.

The two items we had that made life much easier was 1. a boom truck to help set trusses (line truck from energy company).....2. skid steer to help lift metal to roof and people :) 12' ceilings made it tougher for sure.

Buy a metal nibbler and/ or shear - that's the way to fly when you're cutting metal for sure. They're simple, but getting everything square/ plumb is the key...we spent alot of time on that when setting the poles and trusses.

It's doable for sure.

Bowman,

That's a beautiful building.

Building a "hybrid" has some advantages.
First, you're keeping wood out of the ground. If you're not in an area where subterranean insects are a problem, that might not be as big a deal.
Second, laying up a foundation wall first will provide a flat, level surface from which to build, and it also makes sealing the bottom of the building much easier.
True pole buildings can never be much more than glorified sheds IMO.

I've built a pole building and more conventional buildings.
The pole building was a miserable job. Doable? Sure, but if I were you and had another option (bbowman's building as an example), I'd take the other option.

Yup, built a 24x36' 11' celings one 12' rolling door and one 3' entry door. Went up in 3 months of w/e and evenings. Had the Concrete floor poured by friends... (Not recomended, but all I could afford) 13 yrds. I did take delivery of the 11yrds of pee gravel for the base of the floor and spread it myself ... yes before the tractor..... BACK BREAKING!

I'll be building a 24x24' 11' celing PB right next to the existing next year as I need more space for my Tractor and such stuff :D

It's not hard work per se, but it's all in the planning, if you get it off.. well the steel is just not going to fit right and well it's not easy to fix a mistake when you have things in Concrete....

Some very nice examples of some serious work here! Congrats on all builders! Nice work!

I've built several pole barns in the past for customers and I can tell you there's little profit in it.

If you're handy, you can get some "cheap labor" to help you and you have the time to allow for it to be built slowly (we build a pole barn in 4-5 days) then go for it.

Otherwise I'd consider hiring a pole barn builder and shop around for a good price. Business is down right now, so a 25K pole barn I could easily see being built in the 20 range right now.

I have kind of left go of building them because the profit is low and the competition is vast. I'm doing more complex construction to shake off some competition and make more money.

I'm in the planning process of building a 52' x 36' (need a zoning variance to build it) and I'm trying to decide if I should do it myself with my guys. Just for the heck of it, I called a guy I know for a price and he was so cheap, it's barely worth it for me to even bother with it. I'm better off sticking to higher end stuff.

I've built a number of barns, sheds, pole barns, ect, over the years, mostly for myself, but a few "for hire" jobs too. The last couple I've had built for me. The guys who do nothing but pole barns can get materials on the cheap. And they have plenty of low buck labor. I had a 28' X 48' X 14' building built, turn key, cheaper than I could buy the materials (inc cost of concrete floor)

I got seven of them when the utility was changing them on my property. It is possible that the utility doesn't have them becasue they give them away to the owners of the land they have the lines on. They even sank them wherever I ask them.

it all depends on how and who you ask... if you ask managment or some one at the utility garage they will say no. becouse they are considered hazerdous waste... if you ask one of the lineman nicely they may leave them behind for you. you can also buy them new from the same place the utility co gets them

Exactly right FWJ.

I have the numbers right in front of me and the mark-up is so low, it's barely worth me building them anymore.

For the beginner, I wouldn't even consider it if you think about the lost personal time, risk of injury, rental equipment costs, etc.

Unless it's a life-long dream to build you own pole barn, leave it up to the pros. They're working for very minimal profits in these horrible economic times. This is the worst I've seen it in my 20+ years in business.

I may be in the minority here, but I say go for it. My wife and spent about 6 months and built every bit of ours by our selves. It's 32 x 40, 3 bay barn that I originally built to store our possessions while we built our house. It later got turned into my wood shop - fully insulated, electric, water, radiant heat in the floor. It is'nt that big of an undertaking, so long as you have time. Our time was limited to weekends and evenings, and we still had the shell up in about 3 months, and completely finished in another 3 months (with a year in between building the house). Here are a couple of pictures including a finished shot of the interior:D PM me if you have any questions and I'll try to answer.

I tried to do it myself, but it was just too much. If I had a lot of time it would be one thing, but doing it on your "free" time will end up taking you for EVER. You'll be so tired of barn building that you will probably just want to burn the thing down before you finish.
Pay somebody. Really.
And don't mess around with anything less than 12 foot walls. 14 is better and 16 is about right. And get doors at least 12 wide and ten or 12 tall. You'll thank yourself.

Great looking buildings guys. I made a small barn/shed when we first bought our place. It all started with some trusses and barn siding that I got cheap (really cheap) at an auction sale. .......

This is 32 x 32 and built with scraps (disassembled shipping crates from my work) and auction lumber. I had to buy some wood, but even the roof is used. It did take a long long time I do admit but I love buildiing stuff so I did not mind that. Also, we just bought the place and money was tight tight tight.
The whole thing cost me less than $3000 (to give you an idea all the siding plus more I still have in storage was $80. The trusses were $125.

Here is a winter shot to remind us all of what is coming!

NOTE: Errors I made. Roof on door is too low. Didn't put up a heavy enough header and had to go back and reinforce. Used tin on the roof will eventually have to be replaced with new.

Beautiful job on the Shed - Good design! - I built my shop too and had a great time doing it. But I would agree, It takes a little longer if you are doing it yourself. I burned up a bunch of weekends and vacation days..

Sure is disturbing when I get 'pumped-up' over a thread, thats been resurrected, read the whole thing (so I don't asked stupid or repeatative questions), then fine the OP's been gone for a year, and other contributers haven't been around in months! :( ~Scotty
