There was nothing about my uncle John that would ever cause you to confuse him with Rambo. He never talked about his combat in Europe in WWII to any of my family.

It was not until I returned from Vietnam that he spoke with me. Uncle John was a Sherman tank driver in the 9th Armored Division. It was then that he spoke of having 4 tanks in three days blown out from under him during the Battle of the Bulge. They would patch a tank up and send him out again and again. Even then he did not speak of the 5 Silver Stars he was awarded, three from the Bulge, one from Remagen Bridge.

Talk with your aunt as soon as you can before time runs out.

Not a bad suggestion Wolf. She's the type who gets insulted if you infer to her deafness. I wish I get to see her more. She may be at the next family wedding in Oct. Her eyesight is pretty keen still so I could write up some of my questions such as the ships she built, where, vertical welds? size electrodes, thickest stuff she welded, how long she did it, what'd she do after the war, etc, etc.
She may enjoy corresponding by mail like a penpal. Receiving a letter a few times a month may brighten her day and I bet whatever she eventually wrote back would be very interesting. People don't always like to speak of things but sometimes they find it easy to put to paper.

You have bright point here Mike. I asked my wife if one of her sisters knew of Aunt Eunies ability to write. They say she had beautiful penmanship but she is wracked with arthritis and can hardly hold a pen. The last wedding we went to, she had to have her steak cut up for her. It's still a great idea and worth a try anyway even if she cannot answer back, I think you are on point that she may thoroughly enjoy getting some mail.

My grandma lived to be 98. She wasn't directly part of the war effort but was known to bring people into her kitchen if they were down on their luck. I managed to get some stories out of her mostly about my dad. She taught me to make bread.

Best memories was taking her to get groceries in my Buick convertable...top down...crisp fall wisconsin day...she loved being in that car.

Get those stories while you can.
