For the little bit used around here I just use clear highway fuel. The difference in price is minimal and worth the bother. 4 or 5 of the five gallon jugs stored in a metal cabinet does just fine.

Do you have a farmer's Co-Op near you? I am in western TN and many of the Co-Ops here have off-road pumps. If you don't have tax-exempt status: they will charge you a 7% sales tax (per TN law). With todays fuel prices the 7% wipes out most of your savings vs paying regular road fuel price.

i do not know what category the companies are listed under right off hand in the phone book.
but look up "fuel", "gas", "Propane", "LP gas" in the thick phone book i get, there is a dedicated section.
there is only a couple places near me, that sale off road diesel and deliver. but end up charging more than what local gas stations are at. most of the time they state they buy a big batch and need to sale it at the cost they bought that big batch at. and then once delievery charges get add on. for get it. cheaper just to make trips to local gas station.
looking to find some cheap tanks i can toss on trailer "legally" and haul to local gas station and fill up when prices get down.
warning, off road diesel is dyed red. if you are caught with it in your truck / car gas tank, or they look at fuel filters, that you are driving on the road and it shows red. you can get nailed with some pretty hefty and expensive fines!

Nearest co-op is 40 miles away, just never bothered since I do not use more than 10 gals per month. I lived for many years in West Tn (just move east 4 years ago) and none of the local fuel vendors ever asked about tax exempt status, so that must be a recent law change or they did not care who purchased off road diesel.

The MFA Co-Op near me in the Ozarks charges sales tax on the off-road diesel like John_in_TN wrote. If you join the Co-Op, they don't even if you aren't tax exempt.

Hmmm.. I always though off road diesel was only as far away as your heating tank.

I have never known anyone in this area that heats with oil (other than a few shops that burn used motor oil, don't want that in my tractor).
Guess (as they say) it all depends on location.

Here in Oregon, I have one station that gives me a $0.25 per gallon discount if I get it pumped into a container vs. a vehicle, and say it is for off-road use.
OTOH, the low priced station charges $0.25 less per gallon for diesel, so I just get it there.
