This forum will be less, MUCH LESS, without his breadth of experience. Sometimes it is worth putting up with a bit of crustiness to gain the benefit of someone's experience. But, since it appears the majority wants everyone to "be nice" to everyone else, so be it. Personally, I think we have become a nation of weaklings.

Problem was he would post horsepucky when he needed to punish someone for challenging a bad answer. The newbies and the keyboard weldORs would lap it up and repeat it, he was doing them no favors. I generally like crusty old buggers even if they aren't 100%, but he was batting around 50%, not really worth it when unable to control it and chases good people away (again, IMHO).

not going to get into "bashing " any side of this .....

sorry to see any member go ( good or bad ) because they've had enough ...:(

everyone has a point of view ... we as members have to take the info , then think for ourselves.....

there are plenty of people that can shout louder than me (still doesn't make them right )

there are plenty of people that can verbally out match their opponent ( still doesn't make them right )

there are just obnoxious self righteous people that rile me up ( still doesn't make them right )

I thank ALL members for their input and suggestions ... then I sits and I thinks , sometimes I try something suggested .

Life is a constant learning experience ... when you stop learning , it's time to dig that 6 foot hole and lay down ....

his leaving may be temporary , or permanent.. but it is his decision to make ....

I must have missed the thread that started all this. I can say that SA's advice was always agreeable to me. I never saw any posts from SA like everyone is writing about now, his advice was always spot on IMO. I think those who drove him away will be sorry for that day.

. I never saw any posts from SA like everyone is writing about now, .

that's probably due to pruning. right after he unloaded on someone telling them they were a POS for owning an ac weld machine.. something usually got sanatized...

Um.. i don't know the entire story.. but if he said he was quitting.. that would be him making the decision to leave.. ?? his account here is still active. whatever 'vacation' this is.. it is all self imposed and duration, presumably is at his whim.

This is kind of like a job. No matter where I've been. There's always that one bully or rat backstabber or a boss out to prove himself that thrives on making everybody miserable. In my supervisory career I have tried to keep these type of people in mind. I have tried to taylor my skills to make fellow employees comfortable to work for me. This has prove difficult at times working with pipe fitters and weldors. I have a hard time busting someone on test coupon looking at in person. I never have understood how he could judge all these welds on the internet.

If you used a DC stick one time you would see what the man is talking about.

It that really what you think happened?

It seemed to me that he got in a huge pissing match over 110v welders and recommending that some 70 year old woman needed a 230v welder and then started insulting peoples welds and calling them hacks after looking at pics they posted of projects they had done with thier 110v welder. Basically going to great extents to be an all around jerk about it and when he got called out he threw atantrum like a child including cussing and took his ball and went home never to return.

I have no doubt the guy is really talented and has helped many people but his bully mentality and insults turned negative and extremely immature toward the end. It's unfortunate that he could not simply get over the 110v welder pissing match but he escalated it to a point where he felt the need to leave instead of simply letting it go and moving on.

That 70 yr old lady wanted to start welding a lumber rack on her truck.
I want to learn how to wire weld. Suggestions for on-line instruction? Tried to find a mentor. No luck. Classes offered are for folks looking to make a career of welding. I'm just a wannabe with a few hobby projects.

Also looking at the newest Everlast weld. Thoughts?

I just picked up a lumber rack for my truck that needs work. Would that be a good beginner project? It needs legs and two crossbars. Welding quote was $250 including material. Yikes!

I suggest you stay away from the 120-volt Mig machines! Get a 220-volt machine. For general fab work .035" wire is really nice size to use.

I wouldn't want to be behind a lumber rack failure at highway speeds because someone new to welding made some pretty MIG welds.

I always read his posts as "this is what must be done for safety". Based on his background I viewed his admonishments more as trying to protect people from themselves. I've a lot of "stuff" that was welded around my place by the prior owners son. Some of it takes only 1 wack with a 5lb sledge to break it apart. After 1 workshop table collapsed I figured out a pretty weld is not necessarily a good weld.

And then from examples here it seems that most MIG welds are pretty welds.

I assume we are talking about Shield Arc? Or are we not suppose to mention who? Sad to see him go... he provided a lot a knowledge and was very helpful. I am thankful he spent some time with me personally as well. And it also seemed he very much enjoyed opining here... he was very blunt, which rubbed some people wrong, and he (and others) let things get personal... his own fault. His welding skills are very impressive. But people skills are valuable too.

Sometimes when you continually get insulted you respond in kind.

Arc...Just want to let you know that your advice IS appreciated. You have improved my welding and I'm sure a lot more people on this forum could say the same.

Thanks,
Joe
And PLEASE if your leaving let us know where!
As a former training specialist, the day does come when you have ran your full course when dealing with people in a learning environment. You feel Your advice and experience isn't valued anymore. In most cases, that day comes with resentment. Sounds like he has ran his full course.

Hopefully we will be able to appreciate him on other forums.

Ahh.. so it is Shieldarc.
<snip>
Some of us are farms that need to buzz a piece of rusty metal to another piece or rusty medal, during a windstorm with some rain.. and need it to last 20 minutes while we pull a trailer in... Shield didn't realize that every welding project out there doesn't have to be x-ray quality and donw with a 1000-x$ gas mig with cnc setup.. and he ridiculed AC people endlessly.<snip>
Like I wrote, I've seen a lot of "welds" around my place, and they may have been meant to "last 20 minutes" but then whoever did it never came back to do it right.

I hope they don't follow him, but I doubt they will be sorry for that day. I also hope they produce safe and strong welds, not just pretty welds.
