It looks like it may be one of the Alders...(birch family) very common on creek and river banks...

Im on the wrong side of the country... but I would have guessed June Berry, Service Berry, Huckle Berry. Something in that family.

I'm with RandyT - i think it's a hawthorn. Apparently there is a lot of variation as a group and can be difficult to identify sometimes.

We always called them "red-haw" around here!!---If one of the thorns touch your skin it will hurt and swell for days on end!---later the flowers turn into red fruit that goats love to eat! thanks; sonny580

I think Hawthorne is out because it does not have thorns. Thanks for the ideas, keep them comming.
