* The old ones lasted 11 years. Which is about all you're gonna get out of appliances anymore.
Remember when microwaves first came out? Counter-top models with walnut wood grain sides? Wouldn't die! Appliance manufactures built them to cook with.

After determining we generally just use them for reheating.... they worked their magic: added "features" and "gizmos" and QUICKLY designed for a 10 year life! The world we live in.

I bought the microwave I have at work around 1990. It's small and weak and only has a timer you twist but it's still cooking after 36 years.

My mother bought a washer a few years ago with a removable agitator... great for washing things like blankets. I started reading up on them and found that it comes in two sizes. One of the "cons" listed for the smaller unit is that it isn't "smarthome enabled."

I read no further, that's the one I want!

And they weighed about 75 pounds and all the lights in the house dimmed when you turned it on. :)

Haven't had a MW in the house for over ten years now.

I DVR any football game, so I can skip the slow parts, halftime and commercials also. It's the only way I can watch a 3.5 hour broadcast of 60 minute game.
I've been doing it all wrong. I skip the game so I can watch the commercials uninterrupted.:ROFLMAO:

Just kidding, I have no interest in that stuff whatsoever. Just didn't get that gene.

Wait until we discover that our "smart" appliances have been doing the cooking and laundry for all those bots invading our lives!
Maybe that explains why the sheets are always ruffled and dirty on my Smartbed!

Today, when you buy just about anything you have to download an app to use it.

That's bad enough, but what really peeves me is the majority of the apps are hosted in China.

If you are worried about being spied on, at least China already has all your info. Of course, it would be better if the spying app was American, might save our gov't the cost of buying the data from China if they somehow wanted it.

I used to be a HUGE football fan especially whenever the Browns played given I grew up in Cleveland. After Modell moved them to Baltimore I lost the fan drive, and haven't cared much since. Why worry about a bunch of whiny millionaires that don't have any loyalty back?

The fridge in the house we bought this fall has a big display on it. Against my wishes my wife connected it to the wifi so she could have it show the weather, calendar, etc. One morning I noticed that it was showing ads. I figured out how to turn them off and told my wife if I ever saw another ad on it I'd take a hammer to the screen. What really irritates me is there are no physical knobs to adjust the fridge and freezer temperatures. You have to dig down through a series of menus to find the adjustments. I figure it's just a matter of time before Samsung sends it a software update that bricks it. Fortunately the previous owners left their old fridge in the garage so I can just swap them out when this one inevitably dies.

Samsung appliance? DOA IMHO.
Aside from that, my hammer would "accidentally slip" and bust that display to smithereens.
I don't even allow spy "smart" speakers in my house. Hard NO!
If "they" want to spy on me they'll have to tap my phone:LOL:

I have a GE microwave that is just over 20 years old, is used daily and other than the display dimming sometimes, has been trouble free.

Mine was starting to make a humming noise (built in 2006) ... Even though it was keeping everything cold ... I figured out it was the condenser fan motor ... Looked easy to change searched on line, seems like this was made by Kenmore ... $85 for a new one and it's quiet and still keeping everything cold! I also cleaned the coils out, both when I bought the house, and when I replaced the fan and motor.

I thought of getting new kitchen appliances, but I keep reading of how horribly unreliable most are now a days .. I do have a new set of Speed Queen washer and dryer though, came with a 5 year warranty, and made in Wisconsin ... Bought them 4 years ago when I bought the house ... No trouble with them!

I have no use for the water and ice in the door, so I shut them off ...

My fridge is 10 years old (saying that it'll probably croak soon) or so and the door gasket is starting to split at the corrugations, it still works fine so I figured $50-$70 for a set of gaskets. I wish, $200 each for the upper and lower set, I'll be putting up with the splits thank you.

For years we had old, mis-matched washers/dryers that I kept repairing. In '94 we bought our first new laundry pair: Fisher and Paykel. When I mentioned what we bought at work, it seemed every engineer had the same thing!

When shopping, I stepped into a back room and talked to two repairmen. Both said "get a Fisher Paykel." "Never heard of it." They raved about how well they work and hardly require service. "Guts are just a DC brushless motor and a controller." For 20 years and raising 3 kids these things worked like clockwork... until the washer stopped working. It needed a controller. The dealer suddenly stopped carrying Fisher Paykel when a Chinese multinational bought them! Couldnt get parts. They replaced with Speed Queen as their flagship brand.

Built in Rippon WI (45 min away). Noisy'r, washer doesn't spin dry as well, but built like a tractor! It's been 11 years... love it.

I have to admit, for as "un-repairable" as most consumer goods have become, our LG washer is still very repairable. I have had that thing apart for major repairs at least 3 times, and as of today, it's coming apart for a 4th.

My wife jammed a rug in there last night, and surprise... the door latch broke! I guess I could complain it shouldn't have broken in the first place, but at least the part is available in 2 days from a dozen sources... Amazon included!

My only serious gripe with the machine was that one internal hose was badly routed, which caused it to chafe thru and leak at something like 12 months from new. I replaced it with my own hose, and with better routing, which has been holding several years now.

That said, I think it's our third clothes washer in 10 years. If something as simple as a door latch or hose fails, she'll have the appliance store out here replacing it same-day, if I'm not around to intervene. She would've had this one out the door and a new one in by noon today, if my replacement door latch delivery hadn't been faster than a replacement machine!

One engineer at Deere I knew came from Speed Queen. He knew that industry pretty well. The build volumes are immense! Everything is vertically integrated. He described assembly lines that are wagon wheels that rotate. Every minute, 30 boxed washers come off of a spoke... replaced by 30 more base pallets starting the new cycle. Component parts are made all around the periphery. Stamping presses and injection molding machines are  making the switches, fittings, and parts supplying the appropriate spoke. I should prolly get up there for a tour some day. Sounds awesome to me!

Reminded me of the time many years ago when we went to get new washer/dryer and bought a mis-matched pair - not even the same brand. When we told the sales guy what we wanted I thought he was going to hyperventilate.
