JD 3520
All the EPA regulations brought big changes to the industry of engine makers and fuel refineries. So what are people running in their tractors?
I have the JD 3520. Bought new in 2009. According to manual. Low sulfur diesel or untra low sulfur diesel fuel acceptable. Fine print to keep EPA happy, ultra low sulfur recommended. So since new I have run nothing but #1 ULSD on-highway fuel. No #2 died fuel!
One reason is just convience where I by it. The closest two local gas stations do not sell off-road diesel fuel. I know heating oil and #2 diesel fuel is the same stuff. See it all the at work with heavy equipment. I don't use heating oil for the house, so I don't by it. I just fill up fuel cans at the local gas station. I don't go out of my way for diesel fuel.

So, Pro's Con's of #1 vs. #2 fuel and LSD vs. ULSD?

I here many people complaining the new ULSD doesn't lubricate the injectors ow fuel pump well. It's hard on them.
One plus I can notice the exhaust from my tractor seems alot cleaner. No black soot. But I have nothing to really compare it to except other tractors of different models.
One reason I do like and don't mind paying the taxes on highway fuel is better fuel quality. Regardless of brand, just like gasoline, highway diesel fuel does have detergents and cleanings agents in it and in winter it has anti-jelling agents added to it. using #1 should make cold weather starting of a diesel easier. These highway truckers, seldom have starting troubles or fuel lines jelling anymore, unless it's absolutely brutal cold like -20 F or more. #2 diesel fuel lacks those additives.

I use only #1 ULSD maybe I'm wasting my money ?!

I use the standard diesel at the local pump. I add Power Service to it for the added lubrication lost when the sulfur is reduced.

I've never run anything but dyed off road/home heating diesel. Its 40+ cents a gallon cheaper than on road fuel with no down side that I can see.

Same here. Winter time, I'll put some additive into it, but I don't bother during the summer.

I too buy from the pump at a local station out of convenience. When I had a Bolens 154 diesel, I found that using a conditioner seemed to help the starting--especially in colder weather. My Cub Cadet hasn't seen a winter with me yet, but I run conditioner anyway.
If I had a convenient source for #2 fuel I would probably use it, cut it with kerosene in the winter and use conditioner.

I use whatever fuel is convenient, but I always use Schaeffer's SoyShield as an additive. Does an awesome job for my tractor and truck. But I always buy from places that have high turnover on their product. If the stalls are nasty, so isn't their fuel most likely.

Same here... Add Power Service - year around. It's nearly a $1.00 a gallon less - delivered - than the pump price up here!

Been doing it for nearly 10 years now. Use it in my 2002 7.3l Ford and my 2003 DuraMax, too. No injector problems or pump issues, either.

I've used off road diesel fuel with Power Service additive in all my equipment for over 40 years and haven't had any issues. My 93 year old neighbor who had a large construction business all his life says he used the same stuff. He currently has an underground tank (1000 gallons ?) which feeds both his home heating system and pump for fueling diesel equipment.

***True the changes were completed by 2010 therefore
nearly all your comments above apply to that period not todays market.

19*-20* How would not paying the tax on the same ULSD create a down side?

The ULSD has lubricant added. Maybe not so with your fuel oil.
