Need to replace well pump pressure switch and picked up a switch that is rated 40/20 only to find I have a 50/30 currently. Can I use the 40/20 and adjust it up or go back and get a 50/30?

My take on it is that you can adjust it up [ big nut/spring clockwise ]. But a pressure switch is a long term investment, why not just put the right one in. For long term peace of mind. The springs may be different in the one that is pre-adjusted to 50/30. Around here, about all you can find is the 50/30 and the 60/40.

You should be able to adjust it, though read the directions very closely, as they are easier to screw up than they ar to fix. The directions are usually in the box but can be found online.

The pressure switches are all the same. They just come adjusted to different pressures. Adjust the large screw only. It will increase the on and off pressure about 3 PSI for every revolution to the right.

Agreed, many of the new ones I see it's a single adjustment that is tied to both cut in and cut out.
I do remember an old one that had adjustable, separate, cut in / out.. but that's been decades.

One screw sets the range, span, differential, hysterics , dead band or what ever you want to call it. To reduce the stop-start cycling of my well pump. The differential is one turn from max . The pressure screw is set to shut off at 60psi. Iirc the span runs 25-60 psi
