Interesting. As a DIY amateur simply repairing/maintaining old thrashed farm equipment and using three welders that cost me under $100 (used) for all three :) I stay out of the brand-name forums. I look down the Today's Posts list until I find a 'what am I doing wrong' post from a beginner. I've seen a lot of excellent general-purpose advice in response to those.

My best find of all was the thread where the prior owner of my mig welder described what he was doing, as he researched then put on every imaginable upgrade. Then he went and bought a couple thousand $ welder and sold this one for near nothing. A true DIY hobbyist/mad scientist/inventor. I don't think he ever welded anything with this or his new one.

Give it another try. I think you'll find something worth reading.

I agree. Welding Web definitely has its highs and lows, but should not be entirely discounted as it can be both informative and entertaining at times.

Each board sorta has its own personality. I take them as they are or don't go there much. Don't see a real need to try and change every one to suit me.

Being in business in and around the metal trades for over 40 years all I can say is I wish there was a resource like WW when I started out, you couldn't just drive over to a competitor ask them what process they recommend you use for a complex repair or how much you should charge to do it.

And as far as the wack jobs go, although they can be annoying they do seem make a forum more real, many forms I visit are so steril that they are boring.

I got an email overnight from a WW member saying good news it wa up.

I just tried it (hours later). The site now allows me to log in and acknowledges me but does not allow me access.

It's up at the moment (I'm drafting this 2 minutes after your post). I've seen it up/down a lot of times since yesterday afternoon.

Looks like they are re-assembling it piece by piece. With lots of re-boots.

One thing I did just before getting in the first time yesterday (don't know if it helped) was purge the DNS cache:

Windows, at a DOS prompt: ipconfig /flushdns On a Mac ... ???

This makes a new search for the routing, that gets from your request for 'weldingweb', to their numeric IP address. I think WW is running from a new address now. But flushing your own computer's DNS cache might do nothing if the ISP you log into has outdated DNS information. In that case you have to wait for the various links between you and WW to all get updated so they 'know' the routing to get there. This should be just minutes but I've seen a couple of days for a small destination that few visit.

I think what we're seeing is a new admin trying to make sense of a system that over time evolved away from the original 'pure vanilla' VB forum software. I noted that the user 'Administrator' there shows as a new member a week ago.

WeldingWeb

It seems to be up, but the search didn't work for me.

I think the new owner is trying to apply latest-generation VB software to display the WW database. However - that DBS got some random tweaking in the past that made it different from what plain vanilla VB expects. Getting everything to display properly might take a while ...
