Closing the loop -
Finally got around to this. See photo 1. Not pretty but won't break.
I thought maybe I should try again, but then I thought, it is going in a hole, secured by a roll pin, nobody will ever see it again including me.
So I just ground off the excess weld material and stuck it down the hole. Done. Photo 2.
