Re: WELDERS HELMET

Does it charge the battery only when there is a welding arc going on? I was wondering how long they would last. I like the HF one too.

Re: WELDERS HELMET

I have read somewhere that the technology for this type of helmet came form the military. They were developed for our fighter pilots in the event of a nuclear attack they still could see where they needed to go and do what they needed to do. I believe they were developed during the "cold war" era under former Presidents Carter or Reagan, but I can't remember which one.

Re: WELDERS HELMET

Oh, I forgot to add that I have had one for about 2 years. My nephew has never welded before and he learns by doing, but after being shown how to do it. These helmets are great!

Re: WELDERS HELMET

I don't know Mith, I pretty much don't want to get the constricted pupils either. The green spot makes it hard to see the next weld. It might be that even the "clear" lense offers some protection.

The little adjustment knob is a little chinsy and I have had to reassemble it a couple of times when it has fallen apart. But I would rather fool with that once every couple of years then deal with the ball cap type adjustment. I have a big head, I also tend to allow my hair to get really overgrown before I get a severe haircut which should last several months. All of that is to explain why I need an easily adjustable helmet. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: WELDERS HELMET

light all the time, well a shade 4 or something like that. But you have UV protection even if they do not work, you just a spot for a while /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It can happen if you cover both of the sensors and strike an arc.

Re: WELDERS HELMET

I've had mine for about 3 or 4 years, paid about $200 for it, but would not get rid of it for anything. I also like the adjustable darkening feature. Mine has adjustments for shade, sensitivity and delay, made by Jackson Products........

Re: WELDERS HELMET

Does anyone know if these helmets work for us far-sighted guys who can never get our head right to see the puddle through our bi-focals? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: WELDERS HELMET

I'm near sighted. But need bifocals because of correction for distance messes up closeup viewing. The Auto Dark Helmet works great. Just line up everything and start welding. Never have to do the flip down the helmet trick and wonder if you will have your bifocals lined up to view the puddle.

Get yourself a "cheater" lens that clips inside your hood. You will not be disappointed.

I recently got one and could not believe the difference. Prior to using it, I had to take my glasses off and get my head close to what I was welding so I could see the puddle clearly.

Somehow, the cheater lens, clipped into my auto darkening helmet, makes an amazing difference, and being in the helmet, allows me to use my normal glasses when welding, and flip up the hood, and actually see what I did (since my glasses remain on)

The cheater lens is roughly an inch and a half high, and maybe three inches wide (or so).

Did I mentioned I'm impressed with my cheater lens? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Try one, you'll like it... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: WELDERS HELMET

Basically it's a diopter (correction) plate that fits (inside ?) the helmet - they are available in incremental correction amounts (+1.0, etc.)

Here's a photo of the lens and case it came in...

And an attempt at a close up of the text...

These come in various focal powers, like reading glasses, but must be designed to be placed some distance from the eyes, rather than close like reading glasses would be.

Don't know the cost as mine was given to me. I am pretty sure they are fairly inexpensive though...

Re: WELDERS HELMET

I have seen the "cheater" lens, just haven't picked one up to try. The one I saw was only around $10. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: WELDERS HELMET

Interesting stuff Henro. Gotta be a real help to folks like us that need a little vision boost when welding, and who knows it just may keep my nose out of the puddle too.

Thanks for sharing
