The attachment shows a type of weed that is common to our property, they grow a tall spindly stalk that develops light blue flowers on the stalk. To the best of my knowledge the weed is named chicory and I am using a strong concertrate of glyphosate and water mixed together to spray them. Because of the tall stalk it is hard to spray the upper part of the weed without spraying the grass under it, ditto for spraying the base leaves of the weed without a lot of overspray on the grass. Does anyone know how effective it would be to cut the weed off just below ground level and then spray the root with the weed killer? Thanks for any advice.

Use 2,4-D. It only kills broadleaf weeds. You don't need a herbicide license to buy it in small quantities. (quarts) And, it's cheap, about $12/quart.
Mix 1.5 ounces of 2,4-D per gallon of water, and add a good surfactant per label instructions. If you're too cheap to buy a real surfactant, you can just add a squirt or two of dishwashing liquid to your sprayer. It will help some, just not as good as the real deal.

It is Chicory "Wild" Bigfoot is correct 24D will kill it. What type of field is it growing in that you are concerned about the grass?

Chicory is a very common weed!

We have used 2-4D and Crossbow brand weed killer on broad leafs, but have come across some that are resistant and had a guy from our ASCS Office come out, take a look and give us some recommendations. My son wrote it down, so I don't have it handy now.

Thanks for the advice about the 2-4D guys...and it embarrasses me to tell you the picture I supplied was part of my lawn...it has been so dry here the last month the grass doesn't grow but the chicory shoots up like it has been fertilized !!!

Many weed killers do not recommend application in times of grass stress. I have lots of weeds I want to spray but we have not had any good rain in a few months.

JD, Jim is correct. WHen your grass is stressed it's not a good timwe to spray. Mowing will keep Chicory at bay until we get some good moisture.

Boiling water will slow it down a bit , then the poison when it is a suitable time
