I've been trying to figure out how to use a CUT to prepare a rice paddy. But I just can't seem to get how to till it without sinking the darn thing to China.

Should be a good place to get expert advice.

Don't hunt deer anymore. Have elk instead. They come into the yard but would be interested in giving them someplace else to leave droppings besides my front yard. Count me in.

Turned two plots under for a man yesterday evening. Having issue of grass tall and not cutting in. Worth mowing, waiting a week then disking, mowing disking immediately...some of the questions I would have. Has me wanting to move up the purchase of a heavier disk.

I have found that the best option is to bush hog, spray roundup 1-2 weeks later, then disk 4 weeks later.

Count me in. Of the 90 hrs I put on the Kubota since we got it in May, at least half have been clearing, mowing, disking, etc. our food plots. I've got a lot to learn - for instance I sprayed then mowed. I might have read previous posts and learned its waaaay smarter to mow, then spray. Oh well, next year...

Anyway, with the traffic at TBN it would be a great forum.

How many plots and total size are you doing this way? I assume you are using some sort of spray rig? I am trying to get by without having to go through the extra steps, time and cost of spraying but I can see where it should help significantly. One of the plots cut under pretty good and the other the disc just rode on top of the grass. We are getting quite a bit of rain off of Tropical Storm Lee. I hope to get back on them end of next week and they will cut better with the added moisture. It was dusty yesterday afternoon.

Spraying is TIME SAVER, not an extra step! I usually run a no till drill for most of my plots. Spray and drill, done!

I also spray a month ahead too if I have a spot that requires tillage due to a phosphate or lime application. It will be dead in a week, but still there. A month later, the amount of residue is much lower. You may have a few new weeds coming up, but they are so small that they are not a problem.

Have never tried the spraying process for this. What are you spraying and how are you applying it? We typically broadcast seed and fertilizer in one pass from a towed buggy spreader and lightly cover with disc.

In regards to spraying, does anyone know of a herbicide that does not kill clover or chicory, but does kill most of the other weeds.?

Clover is tough to kill compared to most weeds and the most inexpensive option, that carries some risk, is to just spray with a diluted mixture of roundup. There are also some expensive selective herbicides (Poast?) if you have plenty of dough. I control weeds in clover by mowing a couple times a season and plowing under for a corn crop every 2-4 years. The clover stores up a lot of nitrogen over the years, which helps get a good corn yield with minimal added fertilizer. I row plant the corn and only spray the rows with roundup which allows the clover to bounce back strong the following year without the need for reseeding.

That's true. I need to do some digging for a pic of a trial I did with 24oz gly vs 32 oz gly per acre for weed control in clover...

The clover on the right was sprayed with 32 oz/acre of 41% glyphosate 8 weeks prior to the photo, the clover on the left was sprayed with 24 oz/acre 8 weeks prior. Both rates got all of the weeds, except for yellow nutsedge and a few volunteer brassicas.

Light rate of glyphosate (roundup) will get all of your weeds, but it is not without risk. Timing is critical, and light rates speed up development of glyphosate resistant weeds.

Grassy weeds, try clethodim (arrow, select) is my favorite and cheaper per acre than sethoxydim (poast). You need to add 1% of the solution in crop oil with either of these.

Broadleaf weeds are a little trickier. Mowing is the easiest way to handle most broadleafs. 24db (butyrac 200) is probably the best chemical option, and basagran can get several broadleaf weeds and also yellow nutsedge.

Another vote for a dedicated space for wildlife food plots.

A food plot forum would be a great idea.

Count me in as well. I have a hunting club of over 650 acres with over 5 acres set aside for food plots now. I'd love to get the information and asistance on managing my food plots that such a forum would provide. Great idea!

Great idea. I need help with sunflowers - getting maximum size heads and less weeds. My other plots do pretty well.

Bring it on. I think its a great idea. I just recently came back to the tractor forum after being on lawn care site all summer.

What brought me back was I'm getting a new KK II 5' rototiller for my food plots and I'm looking for pointers on tilling.

Still enjoy this site, great info.

I'm all done except for a few cereal grain kill plots and a few small side by side test plots.

Drilled a couple acres of austrian winter peas this morning, did a few plots in mixed brassicas, oats, and crimson clover. One in chicory and rye, one 4 acre plot in crimson, red, and durana clover along with a few oats as a nurse crop.

One of my customers caught me on his trail cam and sent me the pic...
