Good advice, keep the either bunny away if possible, more of a last resort and then sparingly.

I have always heard about ether can wash out the cylinders. I will try to start without ether. I hope to be there in August (still hot) and not need to plug in block heater.
I will have to wait to see what battery or batteries are installed, then drive 40 miles to get what is needed and any other cables.
Do you think the diesel will be good enough to start and load on the trailer? It's been sitting around 12 years as is.
I think it is time to buy manuals for it.

Just talked to my cousin. He says he will look for the manuals when he goes (50 miles) up there to mow. He says he thinks there is one 12 volt battery. Is it located under the step on the left side? He says he remembers shooting ether into the air filter. He doesn't remember a port on the dash. Guess that is why they added a step forward of the JD steps in the photo.

First thing I'd do consering the time it's sat and in the weather is:

1. Bar it over to make sure it's not hydro locked.
2. Check the rad for coolant
3. Look underneath for any oil leaks and check the oil in the motor and loosen the drain plug to see if there is any water in the sump. Water will collect in the bottom of the sump and oil will be on top of it.
4. Check the air filter-cleaner for vermin homes
5. Replace the starting batteries and then roll it over to see if it's delivering fuel and attempt to start it not using starting fluid.

You might get lucky. With me, starting fluid is always the last resort.

Oh yeah, bar it over. Thanks for mentioning that. Planning all fluid checks for being normal, then changing oil and filter, changing fuel filter, checking for fuel flow. After getting tires to hold air.

IIRC using a bar to turn flywheel on this model JD is very difficult. Hole to access flywheel teeth is on the RH side of engine.

Can you use the bolt holding the harmonic balancer on front of engine to roll it over. Not sure how buried it is either.

Other option might be remove the starter if it gives you better access to ring gear.

I would recommend carefully loosening the oil and hydraulic drain plugs just to the point of leaking a little bit and looking for water before any thing is disturbed or rotated.
As far as using ether on an engine very limited amounts while it is cranking over will work. Just don't spray a bunch into the air filter or intake and then go and start cranking the engine over.

Just watched this You tube video of two farmers changing the hyd. pump. With the radiator out, it is wide open to get a pipe wrench on the pump coupling to turn the engine over. Opening from below is doable, but not much room to turn the pipe wrench handle.
