Tractor
John Deere A, B, AR,50,70D,70D STD,2520
Since the leaking front axel on my 2520 has still not been fixed I decided to try to trade it on a new 790. My 2520 (purchaced 10/2006) has 4WD, FEL, and alot of extras like wheel weights and all hydraulic option. The 790 similarly equipped lists for about 2 grand less. What kind of deal do you think they will offer me? My tractor has about 30 hrs. on it and more time in the repair shop than in my barn.

I would try a different dealer for repair before I lost too much money on it. Have you contacted Deere about the so called repairs? JC

I have talked with the dealership owner, after the third time in for service and he assured me they would replace the whole axel with a new one. The next higher JD rep. said that they would get a new axel from the factory and put it on, but now they are going to get all the necessary parts and assemble it at the dealership. This did not make the service manager happy and when we spoke he wanted to talk about the 790 they sent me to test drive more than my 2520. Right now I might settle for an even up trade, I'm so tired of this whole situation.

I wouldn't give up on that 2520 yet.
If your dealer isn't keeping you happy, it's time to bring in the Deere representative.

You'd be taking too much of a loss in that trade, I think. The 790 is a "value" tractor with no frills. There's not much dealer profit in these tractors, so the dealer isn't going to have much wiggle room.

Also, as much as I like my 790 and gear trannsmissions, I know they're not for everyone (read my signature line below). Make sure the 790 will suit you.

Is there a lemon law that applies to tractors?

I think I would be demanding a new tractor, a 2520. They can get yours fixed on their time, not yours!

Dan, why exactly does it leak? How much does it leak? Is the sealing surface gouged or machined improperly? The technology of the design works fine if the components are good. Let them put a new front axle on it. Sorry you had a problem linger for so long. It sounds like the service dept has let you down. Around here a big cause of leaks like this are remnants of hay baling twine.

Do you want a bigger tractor?

Roy, did you read Dan's signature line? He has a nice supply of old tractors.

Yeah I did...just want him to be sure he wants another "old" tractor.

Roy, My wife would tell you that I have never seen an old john deere that I did not want, I simply can't get enough of them. I really like the 790 but I really do not want to take a beating on the trade.

Yeah, I think you would take a beating though.

So, why didn't you buy a 790 instead of the 2520?

The 2520 was chosen for my wife to use for landscaping and gardening, but my wife has yet to drive it for any reason. For some reason I made alot of bad decisions on that deal. I use it for moving fire wood around and other loader uses. I just wanted a new tractor that could be used reliably all the time. I really did not hate it until the leaking axel developed and became a never ending night mare.

Based on what you told me it should have never, ever lingered this long and drained your emotionally. Time to dump the dealer, and stay the heck away from him. What happens if you have an issue with the 790, how will you feel then? Issues with the 2520 like yours is not the norm, and the axle is an easy fix (since everything is out in the open). You need to step up the pressure, and from I read here, dosent sound like you have. otherwise it would have been fixed a long time ago. Sqeeky wheel gets the grease...
As for doing a trade between the two models? I would never, ever do it for reasons already mentioned

Lets us know the outcome

Kennyd, You bet there is a lemon law that applies to tractors(just google Ohio lemon law). There are lawyers lined up to take these cases, at no cost to me, but that's not my way of handling things (even after being badgered by my wifes attorney friend for five days over the 4th of July holliday).

Dan , I am sorry to hear you had so much trouble with this problem..:(
but Duc is right. your just going to haft to start singing loud.
the 790 , though a good tractor is quite a step down from the 2520.
i think you would be sorry in the long runs. seems the problems you are
have are out of the ordnary . and i think if you screem loud enough .
someone will listen. most people here have alot more hours than the 30 you have. without any issue. i have 50 hours. and never had any problems what so ever. and i run it pretty hard...;)

tractor.....;)

Then why make a comment that it's a step down? Some of us are believers in the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle.
It's not a step down at all...it's a tractor marketed to a different group of buyers.
You gotta think before ya post sometimes, Bro...
(I do, I edit my posts frequently before you lads ever read 'em)

Dan,

I, for one, would like to make sure I understand the situation. Is the front axle leak the only issue with the machine, or do you not like the machine also??? If the former is the issue, I would make sure your John Deere rep knows about the situation. They will NOT tolerate poor or unusually slow service. Many ask why JD seems to have such a loyal following; this is one major reason. I know JD as an entity would even replace your tractor if it were needed to keep you as a customer. If you also do not like your tractor, it might be time for a change. I understood Chris' point (as did Roy) that if one were accustomed to the niceties of hydro, etc. going to a 790 might seem like a step back, but the 790 is a true workhorse and would last FOREVER..This might be the choice for you and I suspect you could get a good deal. I personally would not be doing any trading until the regional rep had some say in this case--if he/she has not yet. Roy, my advice to you is to go to your storage building, crank up your 790, press the clutch, shift into gear and drive down the interstate to Georgia and help Chris with some projects. It might take a week to get there on the tractor, but I know that 790 would make it fine (and do so about 100 times.)
