Tractor
John Deere A, B, AR,50,70D,70D STD,2520
Since the leaking front axel on my 2520 has still not been fixed I decided to try to trade it on a new 790. My 2520 (purchaced 10/2006) has 4WD, FEL, and alot of extras like wheel weights and all hydraulic option. The 790 similarly equipped lists for about 2 grand less. What kind of deal do you think they will offer me? My tractor has about 30 hrs. on it and more time in the repair shop than in my barn.

I would try a different dealer for repair before I lost too much money on it. Have you contacted Deere about the so called repairs? JC

I have talked with the dealership owner, after the third time in for service and he assured me they would replace the whole axel with a new one. The next higher JD rep. said that they would get a new axel from the factory and put it on, but now they are going to get all the necessary parts and assemble it at the dealership. This did not make the service manager happy and when we spoke he wanted to talk about the 790 they sent me to test drive more than my 2520. Right now I might settle for an even up trade, I'm so tired of this whole situation.

I wouldn't give up on that 2520 yet.
If your dealer isn't keeping you happy, it's time to bring in the Deere representative.

You'd be taking too much of a loss in that trade, I think. The 790 is a "value" tractor with no frills. There's not much dealer profit in these tractors, so the dealer isn't going to have much wiggle room.

Also, as much as I like my 790 and gear trannsmissions, I know they're not for everyone (read my signature line below). Make sure the 790 will suit you.

Is there a lemon law that applies to tractors?

I think I would be demanding a new tractor, a 2520. They can get yours fixed on their time, not yours!

Dan, why exactly does it leak? How much does it leak? Is the sealing surface gouged or machined improperly? The technology of the design works fine if the components are good. Let them put a new front axle on it. Sorry you had a problem linger for so long. It sounds like the service dept has let you down. Around here a big cause of leaks like this are remnants of hay baling twine.

Do you want a bigger tractor?

Roy, did you read Dan's signature line? He has a nice supply of old tractors.

Yeah I did...just want him to be sure he wants another "old" tractor.

Roy, My wife would tell you that I have never seen an old john deere that I did not want, I simply can't get enough of them. I really like the 790 but I really do not want to take a beating on the trade.

Yeah, I think you would take a beating though.

So, why didn't you buy a 790 instead of the 2520?

The 2520 was chosen for my wife to use for landscaping and gardening, but my wife has yet to drive it for any reason. For some reason I made alot of bad decisions on that deal. I use it for moving fire wood around and other loader uses. I just wanted a new tractor that could be used reliably all the time. I really did not hate it until the leaking axel developed and became a never ending night mare.
