Tractor
Massey Ferguson 165
Just bought about 40 acres of land with a small double wide home. Looking for a tractor to plow the driveway in the winter as well as till a large garden. I've been looking at old ford 8n's but I'm really not sure what to get. I don't like the new tractors (made in china/india) and tend to stay away from such things. Anyone here have any suggestion for a small well rounded tractor?

Do you not have a kioti ck30, Will it not work for your needs?

New or used . . names like japan/korea products Kubota, Massey Ferguson, Yanmar, Tym/Cabelas, LS/New Holland, plus john deere or branson all come to mind.

I share your perception of china and India products even though Mahindra has a good name by many.

Just curious about kioti . . where are they made and where in the u.s. are they popular (I've never seen one at a state fair or dealer in WI or MN).

If you are looking for old iron, the 8N would not be on my list. I grew up on one. No live 3pt, no live PTO. Neither good features for any type of 3pt or PTO work.

If old Fords are your goal, move into the 60s era tractors like the Jubilee or 600 or 800 series. Go on Tractorhouse.com or Fastline.com and look around. You'll get an idea of availability and price.

Tractorhouse and/or Fastline will also let you see the many, many model and make differences available.

A great source for technical information is Tractordata.com. When you see a tractor you like, then search it on tractordata to get technical data about HP, live PTO, etc.

Probably first thing you need to determine is how much money you want to spend.

What Richard said, we moved away from the "older" Fords long ago and while my brother and I both have larger, more modern tractors, he uses a Ford 601 as much or more than anything. Massey made some nice, reliable tractors in that time period, but I'm not really familiar with them.

Yeah, I'm not familiar enough to talk shop on the Massey's either. But I always admired them, very well equipped for their day.

I think the 8N craze is nostalgia based, rather than logistically based. They were a great tractor in their day. But very poorly equipped.

Yeah, I never understood the attraction of the 8N, dad traded ours in back in the 50s for our first 600 and man what an improvement. The only drawback to the "newer" Fords is the price at least down here, much cheaper than new. but a nice 800 Series can run close to 5k. I saw an 841 like we used to farm with recently, I really wanted, but had to pass on it. The Masseys are much more reasonably priced.
