The weather here has been great for starting the "liberation" of our old apple trees from encroaching viburnam and honeysuckle. Since there's been so much discussion about toothbars recently, I thought I'd post a few pics of mine in action.

Thanks for the great pictures. Looks like you have your work cut out for you. The soil looks drier than I would have expected for your neck of the woods. Have you had much moisture lately? Is your soil sandy or do you have any clay?

Bonehead, a Sunday ago we had about a foot of the wettest, heaviest snow we've had this season. It was mostly gone two days later. I had hoped to begin this project a little earlier, but the soil's still got enough moisture in it to make this go pretty smoothly.

We've done a lot of digging around our place and the soils we're working in now are some of the best we've got (too bad there isn't more of that right around the house)--pretty loamy. There is a LOT of seeps and clays around these hills. In fact one of my next projects is putting in some subsurface drain pipe to help the water move off a little more quickly.

By the way, great looking dog you've got there!

44trxfun, thanks for the compliment on my dog. Unfortunately, I had to put him down 2 years ago but he is in my thoughts (and posts) everyday. As a matter of fact my family celebrated his birthday yesterday. Some people might think that is a little strange but he was just like a child to me.

By the way, is that a Newfounland in your picture?

Just TRY doing that without a toothbar. There are times when pictures can't say it all though. That toothbar is much more useful than you can show, right?
One of the best, and least expensive, additions anyone can make to his/her tractor for sure.
thanks for the pics. Love the pics of both of the dogs, and no I don't think it's odd to celebrate the birthday of a loved one of any species.

I did. That's one of the reasons I decided to get the toothbar. Your're right, the pictures kind of make it look unnecessary, but some of those plants had pretty stout root systems. I would not have wanted to do the first one by hand, let alone the ~30 or so we took out yesterday.

Thanks for the dog comment. I agree with ya!

Very nice demonstration of the toothbar advantage. I may yet get one of those. Excellent photos.

CLIFF! Say it isn't so. You don't have a toothbar on your tractor? Oh man! I can't believe it. Next you'll be telling me that your wash and wax your tractor every week. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
You really should get you one, aren't you worth it?

Well, having a backhoe I don't use the FEL to dig very much. Also, I didn't want to scare the neighbor kids.

Toothbars...Yes the are the most effective attachments I've used for the money, but they destroy anything they touch, including your cloths, front fenders, arms, legs! They require extra care when moving near them. Mine is nasty sharp and I warn anybody who wants a close-up inspection. The length of the loader is increased and your turning radius is decreased. They're not so bad when you get some mileage on them, but scary when razor sharp and fresh off the pallet.

Ain't that the truth.... After I first got the tractor was doing some box blade work forgetting house close I was to the truck and then the sickening sound of scratching and plastic breaking... Was the front grill on the suburban /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Tought lesson to learn but hey nobody got hurt I am am sure smarter from it.
