Some have said that a hole saw actually works the best.

The beauty of the hole saw is that you can clamp the TB in position, insert the hole saw in the hole or slot in the TB and it won't wander as you drill.

You shouldn't need a high torque drill, as long as the bit fits the chuck (and it is sharp!) you're good to go. Drill slow.

The Markham's are great. However, I have the WR Long flat toothbar, (FTB), and recommend it. You don't have to take the thing off to backblade. Everything is flat under the bucket, as if there is no toothbar there.
I feel the angle of the bucket when digging is a non issue, since you are constantly controlling and adjusting the curl when digging, anyway. Sort of going by feel after a while.

Nothing against the Markham as it is highly recommended here - but my dealer threw in the WR Long bar when I bought my BX24 and it is great. Especially as a noob, back dragging is a breeze since it is flat on the bottom. I think it is easier and smoother for back dragging with it on than off. And I have abused it and it sturdy.

Just my $.02 - either way you'll be glad you have one.

Where can you buy the WR and do you know how much I use mine for back dragging all the time??

My BX24 bucket measures 46.5" internally, and a shade over 47.5" at the widest point externally. I'm planning to order the WR Long Flat Toothbar.

LOL...I measured my BX24 inside bucket dimensions to the best of my ability and my measurement came to 46 9/16 " ....I ordered my Markham toothbar based on that and it ships this week...we'll see...Melissa said they would make it 1/4" shorter than my dimensions....:p

The Packers fan is 100% correct about the method for drilling into the bucket and installing the toothbar;)

For those still considering the Flat Tooth Bar from from W R Long, I posted installation pictures here.

/ Tooth Bar Question #34
"... how does it work?"

Just fine so far though my dirt piles are still soft from all the rain in CT - a better test of the tooth bar will be when they dry out and harden up. I ripped through a few barberry bushes and shifted a few fallen trunks around just for fun.

It appears to be sturdy. One unusual aspect of this design (unlike "standard" bars) is that the tooth bar's flat plate (or "gum" I suppose, to extend the analogy) becomes the new cutting edge. This is good in that it protects the bucket's own edge, but it's not as as sharp. Whether I will notice any impact of that I can't say.

/ Tooth Bar Question #35
I would have more seriously considered the Flat toothbar if I could find a place to order on line. I don't have the time to futz with dealers and none sold W. R. Long near by.

So I ordered a Markam one. I added 4 teeth (one in each gap) based on some other threads of getting 6 inch on center spacing. They warned it may be difficult replacing a tooth with that spacing. So total of 9 teeth on 48" bucket. My measurement came to 46.5 too. I want the toothbar as a rake as much as I want it for digging.

Let ya know how it works out.

/ Tooth Bar Question #36
I ordered the W R Long bar by phone from one of the dealers in CT listed on the W R Long web site, and it came via UPS. So it was much like placing an online order. Also Carver Equipment sells W R Long and I imagine will ship to anywhere.

Wish that info was in the wiki. I called W. R. Long and he was not much help.

Good idea - I've updated the Wiki page.

I contacted WR Long by email and I received (very) prompt responses (from Vernon Long I think it was), including list price, nearest dealer, and diameter of drill required, so it sounds like you were unlucky in not getting the information you sought.

/ Tooth Bar Question #39
Here's my BX24 with the Markham..just installed yesterday. Came out great!
I used a drill bit with a pilot hole and some cutting oil...about 2 minutes per hole, drilling slowly and squirting oil when the bit started smoking.

Correction, for the record. It was Nelson Long. I can't imagine where I got "Vernon" from.
