my chipper pto shaft is too short to work with my speeco quick hitch. Can you safely lenghten the shaft, or can you use a spline extension like you would use for a pto pump or should i just go out and by and other shaft. thanks glenn

I've seen folks legnthen PTO shafts. You CAN use an extention/adapter.

BUT. If it were me, I'd spring for a PTO shaft that's the correct legnth. They're not that expensive.

I'm a saftey fanatic. JMHO

On most PTO shafts the tubes are replaceable by driving out the pin holding the tube to the yoke. Then you can replace with a new tube, reinstall the roll pin and then cut to length needed.

I measured to figure out how much longer I needed my tiller PTO shaft after installing a quick hitch. Took it to a drive line specialty place (for truck shafts).

They found me a drop off piece and cut it to length for me for $20. Buying a 4 ft stick at TSC would have been $50--if they had the size I needed, which they didn't.

If you take the whole thing, they can do it in a fraction of the time you or I can.

That is cheaper than my idea of using a 1 3/8 to 1 1/16 adapter then a 1 1/16 to 1 3/8 adapter on that. The whole arrangement would run around $40, but the part are easier to find than an old shaft. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
