I just discovered 2 slices on one of my tires. I hate to think about it, but any thoughts on ways this could happen?

Something sharp got caught in the chain trapped against the tire?

it's hard to see in the pics, but it doesn't follow the seam. i.e the radius of the cut changes. There are 2 cuts-roughly opposite each other.
My first though is troublemakers, but we don't really have much trouble up here. and they could have done much worse than that if they wanted to make trouble.

The tire rubbed against something sharp. Check the front tire on the same side for similar slice. If you were in my neck of the woods I would say it was a chunk of our volcanic rock. They chew the snot out of my tires.

What ever rubbed against the tire was stationary - that's why the slice follows the curve of the tire.

Its very likely that the damage occurred prior to the chains being put on the tires - notice the chains did not provide any protection.

could be from ice?

whis - that's a real possibility. Ice would make a very thin, smooth cut - like shows in those pics.

I did mine on a barbed wire fence. Bush hogging along the fence on a slight slope, and got just a little too close.

If I am looking at the pictures right it looks more like a straight cut rather than a circular cut that would be made if the rotating tire sideswiped something. Is it possible it was hit by something else passing by? If the tire was rotated so the slice was horizontal and positioned at the top side of tire rotation, would it be at truck bed level?

The local tire store's newest salesman?:)
Is the tire useable?

It sure does look like vandalism, thats a pretty nice cut.

one of the cuts has widened, not sure if it's due to the temperatures. it doesn't appear to be leaking, but a failure while I'm using the loader would be bad.

looks like a factory seam to me. looks too smooth and even to be a cut of some kind.

Keep the chains on it so you won't be hit with flying rubber when it explodes. :)

the cuts are in an arc, but doesn't follow the seam. the arcs are closer the the wheel in the middle, and closer to the tread of the tire at the ends

Its a shame, those tires don't look that old.

only 160some hours on them.
I did an experiment. I held a marker stationary, and rolled this can lid past it. The pattern is the same as the cuts.
can ice be sharp enough to cut a tire like that? I can't think of anything else I've run close enough too.
