Tire Chains - best style

Just as a follow up - NONE of the dealers and/or manufacturers I e-mailed replied. Interesting. As much as I like those nasty studded Norse chains, from what I have been able to find out, they cost at least twice what a 2-link ladder chain costs. Probably overkill anyway, and no doubt rough on my concrete floor. I've settled on getting 2-link ladders for all 4 tires - I expect I'll be in fine shape with them.

I was going to get 2-link v-bars for the front (only $25 more then std-ladder), but I think they'll might as tough on the concrete floor as studs. I don't know - can't decide between std-chain and v-bar for the front...

As has already been noted, rubber mats or scrap plywood will do a good job of protecting your floor, if you feel you need v-bars or similar studs. A couple of lengths of old 1/2" plywood have done the trick for my floor - and I'm still on the same pieces of plywood after 6+ years.

I've got 4 link v-bar ladders. I wanted something like the Norse chains or Duo-grip style. The ladders do fine with my R4 tires going straight up and down a hill. When running on a side hill, however, they don't do near the job that Duo-grips do. Ubfortunately, no one makes duo-grip style chains to fit my tire size. I guess it's just one of those sizes on which the pattern just doesn't work out so well.

If you are worried about the v-bars/studs damaging your floor, and don't want to put down mats or plywood, I have seen duo-grip chains without the cleats.

I have been researching chains since last winter. The only two places that I could find chains online in my size is Buy Tire Chains & Snow Chains from the Traction Specialists© and http://www.tirechains.com/. Tirechainsrequired.com has the nasty studded Norse type chains. They call them Aquiline Talons. They are expensive but you can tell by looking at them they will shred concrete. Mine should be delivered tomorrow. It has taken me this long to get these chains since I first started looking at them last winter.
