Thought I had a Lemon instead of an Orange

I thought I might be able to look at my shop manual and get the definitive answer to both questions, at least for my L4310HST. It only mentions the 3-point speed control affecting lowering rate in either the shop manual or the shop manual. But that's not definitive...

As for the hour meter, the owner's manual says only that it indicates the number of hours the tractor has been in operation, which sounds sort of definitive, but probably isn't. Imagine my shock /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif to find that the shop manual doesn't mention either the tachometer or the hour meter anywhere, at least not that I've been able to find. It shows them a couple times, but never discusses their operation.

It appears that empirical data will be the only way to get an answer.

I had the same luck with the B2710 shop manual, Mark. Wondered whether it's just not there or whether I just hadn't found it yet.

Thanks to all for the responses and your own "first time' tales...good salve for the pride wounds. Would have been more interactive on the board today, but out playing with the big guy. The tractor wasnt my first choice, and really never entered the domestic equations, until I started looking at Mustang GT convertible ads after I recently retired (Geezer-and-Cruiser syndrome). Once the wife found out about the $26g's for the Pony, and we had some land tim-bered (you know what that looks like afterward), it wasnt hard to talk down to $15K for a tractor. I picked up $10K by her calculations, and got 25HP instead of 500, cheaper insurance, and the firm knowledge that no young chick on the short side of 45 would ever give me a second look on the Kube. 'Course she'll just nevr believe this was my strategy all along.

My 3-point hitch lowering is the knurled knob you all mentioned, below seat and easy to adjust, turn right to slow the lowering (0nly) speed, and all the way right to lock that setting. It works.

Best, and looking forward to being a regular.

Bird - If it's in there, someone else will have to find it - I quit! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I had the exact same problem with my B2100. My son was sitting on the tractor while I was busy with something else. Couple days later, the 3pt won't budge. He must have turned the knob and closed the valve. My Wife also loves to see me get frustrated with this sort of thing. "why don't you read the manual", she said. I don't know about the rest of you, but I always have to figure it out for myself. Maybe it's an engineer thing. Just like with kids toys...never read the assembly directions there either. Of course, my wife was right. What took me a couple of hours to figure out, I could have found in 5 minutes with the manual. I guess we are all bound to get /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif on occasion. (just wish it didn't always happen when the wife was standing there, she gets far too much pleasure out of it /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif)

Gordon, While I using the 2710 today, I played with the adjustment knob and screwing it down all the way to pretty snug (I didn't want to really try to force it), it stops it from lowering, but it would still raise the 3-point, although with no implement on it, it came up a bit jerky, but not really slow. Maybe if I really tightened it down hard (which I'm not going to do), it might stop it from raising.

I just came in to recover from the heat for a few minutes and can report on the 3-point speed control on my L4310HST: I closed it 1 turn from where I normally set it, and the implement would not lower, but would raise at normal speed. Then I closed it all the way, another couple or so turns. It would neither raise nor lower. I opened it half a turn, no change; another half a turn and it would raise at normal speed but still would not lower. So, on mine, it's a lowering speed control only, but will prevent the implement from raising if closed all the way. No practical use for that function, as far as I can see.

I suspect that if I had twisted a little harder on the knob, it would have kept mine from raising, too, since it was a little jerky coming up at the point to which I did close it, but I'm like you, Mark, I can't see any practical use for that function.

And how hot is it up there?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif It's only a little over 80 here this afternoon, but I had to take a couple of breaks to recover from fatigue instead of the heat. But at least, I did get the tree pruning done, hauled a trailer load of limbs to the burn pile, tilled and hoed the garden, dug potatoes for supper and for my wife to can a dozen pints, picked enough green beans for supper, and broccoli and cauliflower for her to freeze, and a couple of heads of cabbage.

It hit 91 in the shade here today, and I'm not accustomed to it yet. Well, I might as well not lie about it - with the humidity we have around here, I never get to where I can deal with it too well.

At least I'm not crazy---On my 2350 I do have to snug the valve for it to shut off all function. As far as a good use in shutting down the 3pt I have not figured out a useful one at this time, but there must be a reason it shuts it down completely.
Something else to think about I guess. It was hot and humid in Delaware today. I'm hiding in the house to cool off for a few and then back outside. Gordon
