When I was a kid, I was free to use my folks' cars if they were available. I had to keep gas in them, and pay them for my insurance. The rear tires were bald and the clutch was burned out in my dad's Nova about 2 months after I got my license. So he 'let me' pay for new tires and a clutch repair. 
I took it a lot easier on the car after that.
