stacked and stickered
How is your experience with stacking outdoors like that, and only covering with a piece of metal roofing? Does it dry out well enough even with rainstorms and snow keeping things moist?

It will end up just as dry as any lumber out of a kiln, that's stacked in an out building, and left there for a time.

As long as the green lumber stack is covered well enough to keep all the rain/snow off it.

A full roof shed with open sides and generous overhangs would be better. But more expensive. I think meter readings 10-13% at edges, center pieces might reach single digits. But some end up in the attic above the workshop and temps get up in the 90s+. Cherry and oak were dried in kiln ans stored inside. Outside stacks mostly red and white pine. Whie cedar was out about a year then put inside storage barn, no heat. Jon

Well as I expected, I'm not finding a ton of time to devote to sawmilling. But I did finish off this silver-maple log into one big slab and a dozen 1x6's.

Well over on my other thread for pouring a big concrete pad in front of my garage, I also covered making this timber-frame soil-sifter.

But after that job was done... it didn't have any more utility. So I decided to adapt it to a new purpose.

And $40 more lumber turned it into:

A log/slab-wood cutting rack! Have yet to test it out.

But it does serve as a landing spot for saw-mill slabwood off cuts for now.

I usually use my forks for slab take off. I also use a clean tire wash brush to brush all the saw dust off before stickering.

A couple of pitures showing where some wood is stickered in the attic of the storage building/workshop. First has red pine, white pine and beech. Second has ash, maple, white pine and some oak slab/cutoffs. Jon

The other thing to think about when making those big slabs is how are you going to machine them. I ended up buying a 12" jointer to go along with my 15" planer, but I can not afford to go to the next wider machines. But I have a few 17" wide slabs. Will have to slice that one narrower on the band saw to use some day.

The slab was given to me, is 93" long x 22" at its widest point. Over 2 1/4" thick. Don't know what it will become. Jon
